Question

back up monthly

May 5, 2016 11:10PM PDT

I have windows 10, I have backed up twice and have lost two thirds of my 1 TB hard drive. surely you don't have to back up every thing every month, it took 5 hours, surely you can, just have the major things backed up. sorry I am fairly new to computers, and can someone explain how to do it

Re: backup

An image backup takes a lot of place and a lot of time, if there's a lot of data to backup.

Alternatives are:
- incremental backup by adding the changes since the last time to an existing image. Some backup programs offer that option
- file backup: make an image once in a while, and between images only copy your own changed and new files to another place
- manually copy your most important documents and pictures to another place (like the cloud) and don't backup all those downloaded movies

What would you prefer?

I've just done a full backup at beginning , then I've created an weekly incremental backup. You can set a backup schedule with Windows Backup( it is good to make a system image but not able to backup whole drive), then it will do incremental backup by default after the first full image. Or you can try what I use, that is, AOMEI Backupper (a free software). It supports to backup partition, system, disk and file, also the clone utility of it is good for me to upgrade disk.

Many backup software has the following features : Full, incremental, differential and schedule backup . Just choose which features suitable for you .
If, as I recommend, you elect to get backup software, there are many good choices. I personally use and recommend Macrium Reflect or EaseUS Todo for most home users. They will backup what you setting . When needed, restore individual files.
