Back to .dat Discussion

Something new. Per Donna's advice, I set Notepad to open my dat file and it worked. File had only 32 k in it. Now it has 325k and when I try to open it says it is too big and do I want to use Word Pad and I say yes. Then it gives me the message that it can't be opened because another application is accessing it. I don't have anything open. I restarted and got the same thing.

From 32KB to 325KB? It seems to me that you have not emptied your Temporary internet files before viewing the .dat file again?

Try emtpying the temp files and history then check to see if the size of index.dat has changed.

With regards to the other issue (another application is accessing it.), Open task manager to view if wordpad.exe is in the list. If wordpad.exe is listed, highlight it then select stop or end process or shutdown task.

I used the options in IE6 to clean out TIF and History. When I went into windows explorer and opened the TIF, to my suprise all the cookies had also been deleted. But more importantly, there was a file still there "Class3CodeSigningCA2001.crl" It came from http://crl/verisign.com
I deleted it and dat file came back to normal with only that one file that we talked about in earlier discussions. However, when I restarted Class3 code etc was back in TIF but the .dat file was only 46k. What have I got here? Also forgive my ignorance but I do not know how to open Task Manager. I am using Windows 98 SE.

One Win98 users reported the same .crl - Certificate Revocation List that he found in his temporary internet files folder here and managed to make it disappear by importing the certificate in IE. You might want to follow or give a try so it will not appear in temp files folder again.

To open Task Manager, press Ctrl, Alt & delete (all together) or right-click an empty area in the taskbar then select Task Manager.

Just restarted and that file is gone but dat file is now 80k and won't let me open saying that file is being acessed by another program. I forgot to mention in earlier post that the file is referred to as Certificate Revocation List.

Donna, I don't think Win 98se has Task Manager. Also I tried to import into IE6 but couldn't make it work. Unfortunately file keeps coming back. Do you know where or how I got this file to begin with?

How about opening MSCONFIG by typing it in Start>Run then select Startup tab. You can also get a free Enditall program that will show you the running applications and will let you end the task easily. - http://home.ptd.net/~don5408/toolbox/enditall/

Do you know where or how I got this file to begin with?
Class3CodeSigningCA2001.crl - Some programs came with certificates. Maybe you've installed a program that requires it or viewed a page that saved this copy of .crl file. Does manual deletion of this Class3CodeSigningCA2001.crl file doesn't work?

I've checked MSCONFIG and nothing in there that shouldn't be there. I have manually deleted the file in TIF but it keeps coming back. Even though I couldn't get the right path to "Import" it into IE 6, I was able to open the file and save it to IE6 but that didn't solve the problem like it did for the other person.

I have manually deleted the file in TIF but it keeps coming back.

Try using Spybot's Secure Shredder. It should permanently remove it, without any further possibilities of recovery.

Are you sure that IE isn't recreating the .crl file every time it is started? I think there were some discussions in the old forum about revoked certificates (a security alert - someone had generated valid MS certificates that MS had not requested). I think the revoked certificates list was set up to ensure that those certificates were not allowed.

Marianna, I'm having trouble figuring out how to import it into IE6. When I go into the IE6 Import Export wizard it gives me the choice of importing favorites or cookies and this is neither.
So when I browse to Temporary Internet Files, even though Class3DCodeSigningCA2001.crl is there it won't let me move it to the browse box to import it.
I apologize for asking you folks so many questions on this, but it has me baffled. My Index.dat file in Windows/Cookies is normal with no problems. It is just the index.dat box in TIF that is over 300k and also has the url file listed.

I'm getting confused...
Dec 2, 2003 11:32AM PST

Let's see if I have everything correct...

- you emptied TIF using an IE function
- your index.dat file was at 325K, went down to 46K and then back up to 80K
- you manually deleted a .crl file
- your index.dat file is always in use when you try to open it with notepad/wordpad

What is the problem that are we trying to fix?

Re:I'm getting confused...

Sorry, it has been confusing. On Dec 2nd a file showed up in my TIF Called Class3CodeSigningCA2001.crl and even though I delete it it comes back on each restart.
When I noticed that the dat file has gotten much larger also Donna showed me now to open dat with Notepad to see what is in the file. I can open dat file in Windows/Cookies but the dat file in TIF which is currently 256k(changes) will not let me open it saying that it is currently being used by another application. I have no other applications running. I even double checked startup using MSCONFIG to be sure.
Bottom line is I am asking how to get rid of the Class3CodeSigingCA2001.url file in TIF. It appears as Class3CodeSigningCA2001.crl with the Internet address of http://crl.Verisign.com. I think I have tested everyone's patience on this subject so just let it go.

Sorry if the help doesn't seems to work Sad
Not sure if you've tried the get rid of the .crl file using the secure shredder of Spybot-Search & Destroy.

Other ways (if you're still want to try to delete the .crl file) is delete from DOS command or try to delete in Safe mode.

Donna, tried all three but when I restart it is back in TIF. I've drawn the conclusion that items in TIF are not considered files. I say this because if I browse to TIF and find Class3CodeSigningCA2001.crl it won't go into the box when I click on it. In fact, none of the cookies that are also in TIF will go and therefore my conclusion that items in TIF are not files. Another reason is when I used the schredder in Spybot, it wouldn't let me add it from the TIF file. It wasn't until I went into TIF and saved Class3CodeSigningCA2001.url to "my Download" file that Shredder would add it and shredded the file in "My Download". But when I restart it is back in TIF.
So, many thanks to all of you for so much help.
It isn't that important to get rid of it but I have a thing about not giving up which sometimes drives me to drink.

I think it might be a valid file...
Dec 3, 2003 8:18AM PST

It keeps coming back if IE (or IIS) wants it. It gets imported if your browser requests http://crl.verisign.com/Class3CodeSigningCA2001.crl and will show up in TIF if your browser requests it. This MS article talks about crl files being copied to your PC. However, it appears to be something that usually applies to a web server and not a browser...

A search on my PC (I don't use IE much) reveals a file in the MSN Messenger cab files, not TIF.

Your index.dat file will grow over time. I saw a screen print the other night of someone's TIF directory that had a 5MB index.dat file.

Dec 3, 2003 6:37AM PST

Let me see if I understand.

You have an entry in the TIF (something.crl).
You can remove/delete said entry.
You can then surf around an said entry does not return.

However if you reboot said entry is back.

Do you happen to have an always on (read expensive) internet conn?

However if you reboot said entry is back.

this is clearly something in one of the following places:

1. MSCONFIG.

2. Start up.

3. The Registry.

Start with MSCONFIG and go to all the tabs to see if there is such an entry.

Then proceed until you get to REGEDIT and do a 'find'.

I suspect you will find the entry here and if you are not losing functionality by deleting it and continuing to surf but are being annoyed when it comes back on re-boot then it is a registry item.

it should be safe to delete based on what you have said.

There is nothing in MSCONFIG that shouldn't be there and hasn't been there before this happened. I did a reg edit and a "find" and deleted any references to Class3CodeSigningCA2001.crl.Doesn't change anything . I remove it using Options in IE6(delete temporary Internt files) but then immediately restart and it is back in TIF. You say there are three places it has to be. It is not in Msconfig or registry. Where is the third?

I don't have a broadband/always on conn so I have no idea how that functions.

I'm just guessing/wondering if what your seeing in the TIF is a function of the broadband being enabled on a start-up.

If you remove the item from the TIF.
Verify it's gone.
Shutdown.
Turn off/unplug the cable.
Boot the machine.
Is the item back in the TIF?
