Awards and Claims harassment

Jun 5, 2007 7:36AM PDT

I've been getting calls from a company telling me I've "won" a prize, and they will not stop calling me, despite the fact I told them clearly that whatever thing it is I won, I did not sign up for. They gave me my name and address printed on there, which was correct, but gave an e-mail address I haven't used in YEARS.

The guy I talked to tried to keep me on the phone despite telling him I wasn't interested, and I never signed up for this. Then, he began to give a long speech, so I decided, after being annoyed, to hang up. He proceeded to call back so I had another house member talk to him, and she ended up hanging up on him as well. Then, my 3rd house member answered him the NEXT time he called, and it seemed the calls stopped until he called again 5 minutes later.

After about another good 5 minutes of hanging up the phone on him, he seemed to have stopped. I remember getting a call about this a few months ago from a much nicer lady, who never called back after I told her I wasn't interested... once. But what can I do about this? It's harassment, isn't it? Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Next time someone calls and insists on pitching you...

... simply ask them what kind of underwear they have on. What color is it? Is it frilly and see through? etc, etc. It works especially well if the person on the other end of the line is the same sex as you.

Another tactic is to ask them to hold on a second, set the phone down, and walk away. If you want to really be mean you can come back every couple of minutes ans ask them to wait just a few more seconds.

I also heard a audio clip on line one time (I will see if I can still find it) where the phone solicitor is asked what relationship they have with "the victim". The fellow who answered the phone then proceeds to spin out a tale as if he is a cop on a murder scene and begins to interrogate the salesman on the phone. How long have you known the victim, yada, yada, yaada... By the time he was through he had the salesman crying... especially when he spoke to the side asking his imaginary co-policemen to trace the call. They pretty much cut it off about there.

Bottom line... they called you. You don't have to help them in anyway and if you are feeling harassed you can always screw with them or ask for their contact information and to talk with their supervisor. I prefer the setting down the phone and walking away bit myself.

Legally what can you do? Call your states better business bureau and ask what state and federal laws apply. Me... I'm gonna mess with them.

So Antoshi... what color underwear are you wearing?

Use your "Call Forwarding" function and ....

Off the top of my head......

........ tell him to give you his phone number so you can call him back.Happy

There is a national "Do Not Call" Registry.

https://www.donotcall.gov/default.aspx

These sorts of guys are merciless.

I used to receive calls "about my mortgage" which I don't have. I never told them that, but only asked where they got their information. (Probably from public records, but the callers are not the ones who search through those records.) Then I'd just hang up. Got a bunch of the same sort via emails, but they just send them out en masse.

Frankly, I don't know if one can still report harassing/abusive phone calls directly to their phone carriers. You might check your phone book to see if there is any mention of those sorts of problems, or call them.

Did you jot down the name of the so-called "companY"?

I'd just hang up if they call again. Then leave the receiver off the hook for a while.

I can empathize with the frustration and annoyance you feel.

Good luck!

I had recently "won" a trip to Florida

Nice motel, rented car and etc. All I had to do was listen to a pitch for a timeshare. I didn't buy the story, though and just hung up.
