Resolved Question

avoid/bypass download manager

May 29, 2015 7:21AM PDT

Over and over, when I find some software I want to download, it starts downloading a download manager. Much of the software I want does this.
The problem is, as I see it, once I let the download manager have control of this computer, it can download anything it wants and put it just about anywhere. The result is I cancel the download and look elsewhere. Again, problem is, so many application vendors insist on using their download manager.

All the browsers and applications of that sort can download just about anything with no need for a so-called download manager.

This includes the download manager I always get when I try to down via the CNET web pages.

So my questions are:
1: How can I bypass the download manager? I suspect there is no method, but have to try anyway.

2. Is there a way to ensure the download manager does not behave badly? I cannot imagine how, once given permission to make changes, this might be done. But have to ask anyway.

Thanks for your time.

need OCR software

Well, as I expected, something totally unexpected. I am glad someone has filled that niche.
Unfortunately there is no category that looks like OCR. Any suggestion on an application to convert a PDF to text?
On second thought, I'll search this forum for that and maybe start a new thread.
Thank you for your time.

I never had to convert PDF to text outside

Reader or Foxit. Why? Because I can select all, then copy, then paste that in Word or such.

What do I use for OCR? Tesseract.

Be aware that it has more options than the biggest Swiss Army knife. Can be bewildering to some.

OCR
May 30, 2015 7:12AM PDT

Hello,
I read about Tessaract. I really don't want to mess with that interface. I need to move data from one computer to another and soft copy media is strictly prohibited. The data must be printed then scanned. PDF is best. The latest post in this forum is from 2014 and covers tessaract. The next latest says it does not do PDF.
I don't mind paying, but everything demands I use a download manager. Ninite has no category for OCR so I entered a suggestion for same.

I'll post this as a separate thread, but now am having a hard time finding the button to start a new thread.

can post

Evidently I cannot edit a previous post. Just before making the previous post the button to log in would only let me register. I am already registered. Just now, it allowed me to log in so that is not a problem now.

So a self imposed limitation?
