Resolved Question

Avira pro advanced scan setting

May 4, 2017 2:02PM PDT

Hi , years ago there was a post on this forum (written by Donna Buenaventura I think) with detailed instructions for advance scan setting for Avira pro. As I was updating Avira over the years I kept the scan setting unchanged. Recently as I temporarily uninstalled and reinstalled Avira I lost the that setting and cannot find the link to the original article. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you

I Am Using Avira Free Which Has Similar Scan Settings

What do you need to know? RIGHT clicking on the Avira icon in the lower right corner of the system tray, then choose "Manage Antivirus" will bring up the basic Avira console. Once there, clicking on the "gear/settings icon" next to "Real Time Protection" will get you the basic scan settings for Real Time Protection. (You can also access this same screen by clicking on "Extras" in the upper left corner, choose "Configuration".) Here, I click on the + sign next to "Real Time Protection" on the left, where you can make your selections there,,,,, then the + sign next to "System Scanner" on the left and make sure both are set to "All Files". Most of the other scan settings I leave to default, although many also choose to "Scan Archives" in Real Time Protection, although that's up to you.

If you'd like to add or adjust the automatic scanning time, click on the "Scheduler" listing on the left side of the main screen. You can then adjust when the auto scans occur, or you can also add automatic updates or extra scan periods.

Hope this helps and if there's anything else you need, let us know.

I Am Using Avira Free Which Has Similar Scan Settings
May 4, 2017 11:20PM PDT

Thank you Grif. This should help. The original post talked about making scan several layers deep , about Advanced Heuristic Analysis etc. I wanted to compare the old setting to the configuration in the reinstalled Avira, to make sure I did not miss anything and again have maximum protection. I was looking for a similar setting to the scan several layers deep ( speaking from memory , so the details may not be totally accurate).

I will follow your instructions . Thank you. will let you know tomorrow.

She Was Probably Referring to Heuristics...
May 5, 2017 10:44AM PDT

And Heuristics is a little different on the newer versions of Avira, but settings are in the same location as I mentioned earlier, in "Real Time Protection" and "System Scanner". I set Heuristics in both those areas as "Medium" which I believe is default. Setting it higher tends to bring up more false positive detections.

Hope this helps.

Avira Antivirus and firewall
May 5, 2017 4:19PM PDT

One more question Grif- until recently my Avira happily worked with free Comodo firewall. Until the last Comodo update few day ago that is. I like CFW, particularly it's Sandbox ( it is called the Container in the last version of CFW 10). If I may ask -what firewall are you using with your Avira?

I have win7.

Thank you

I'm Using The Standard Windows Firewall
May 5, 2017 4:54PM PDT

I use the standard Windows firewall on my Windows 7 and Windows 10 machines. Although Comodo wasn't my favorite, I have used it in the past, but eventually chose ZoneAlarm. Eventually though, I moved away from it and found the Windows firewall to be sufficient for what I need. (You have options to setup both "inbound" and "outbound" rules if you choose, as well as allow or disallow apps.) I haven't used ZA in a few years now. In addition, I enabled the firewall in the router so each computer has two basic firewall protection schemes.

Hope this helps.
