Avira doesn't check email??

I don't understand how avira can be so highly recommended if it doesn't scan email.

Carol...Thanks for your timely response. I gather Avira takes the position that it's not the email that's the problem but what it tries to do. Apparently avira blocks the hostile action by scanning the read/write activity not the email itself.

I take Avira's high rating as an indication that this approach works.

I was using avg until a couple of years ago but switched to avast for some reason that I can't remember. I was just getting ready to upgrade to avast pro when they cut off my free version to force me to upgrade. I didn't like the compulsion involved so I think I will go with avira for a long while and then upgrade if I'm sure it meets my needs.

I use Sunbelt pro fire wall.

I don't use the _extreme_ (imho)email safety used by some of the contributors in the thread you linked to because I just wouldn't use email period if I felt I had to do all that.

"I hear you". One of the "comments", I especially found a bit extreme. At the risk of offending anyone, I'll leave out the specifics. A good deal of it (IMHO) is all about commonsense. With that said, some have less commonsense than others, and it's why I feel Mark's guidelines are important.
