Question

Avidemux 2.6: Unable to save selection as jpeg images

I had been using Avidemux 2 and I just installed ver.2.6. I’m trying to save a section of a video I copied, but I don’t see the menu item “save selection as jpeg images”. How can I do this on ver.2.6? Also, I can’t find the “go to frame” selection. Was that feature eliminated on ver.2.6? I haven’t been able to find an answer on the Avidemux forum.
I don't see a menu option to save either

Thank you for your help.

Frame editing is not present in 2.6 for Mac: 2.6 is time based and not frame based. Version 2.5 is frame based, but that version keeps quitting.
I had been using ver.2.5 for a while before it started to quit on a regular basis. I've been copying MKV images from anime videos and saving the images as jpeg files in order to make gifs. I reinstalled the app when it this problem started, but the reinstallation did not correct the problem. When I opened the video I would get the following message:
“H.264 detected if the file is using B-Frames as reference it can lead to a crash or stuttering. Avidmux can use another mode that is safe but YOU WILL LOSE FRAME ACCURACY. Do you want to use that mode?”
Previously when I selected yes, then audio, then main track, the video opened without a problem. Now when I select yes the app quits. My Mac’s operating system is Yosemite ver. 10.10.5. Do you know if there is a way to correct this problem? I don't know how to contact the developer and I can’t find an answer on the Avidmux forum. I can’t leave a message on that forum since the site won’t let me register. I can’t find another app for Mac that will allow me to save frames. I’m hoping someone at Cnet.com will have the anwer or direct me to a website that will. Thank you again for your help.

As I read more about the product

It's something it doesn't do. Time to find another app.

You can't correct the app since they don't publish source.

I had a feeling that would be the answer. Do you know if there is a similar app available for download on cnet.com? Thanks.

That may be VLC Player.

I have the VLC player, but unfortunately I didn't understand the tutorial you indicated. I'm not very tech savy, so that's why I was using Avidemux. I don't know what else to do. I'll probably have to close my blog if I can't find a simple to use app. Do you have any other suggestions? Thank you for your help.

Just one.

In reply to: Avidemux 2.6: Unable to save selection as jpeg images

Have your friend that helps you out walk you through the VLC Player method. Some folk find it too hard the first time.

Also, I find it easier with 2 screens as I can have the tutorial on one and the app on another. Like this.

Nobody helped me with the VLC Player. I just downloaded it and use it to watch videos. Everybody I know who makes gifs uses Avidemux. The tutorial showed a "tools" menu item with doesn't seem to be on my VLC Player menu bar. I going to leave a question on that website. I don't know what else to do since I can't contact the developer or register for the Avidemux forum. Thanks again for your help and quick response.

Why I can't talk about Avidemux.

In reply to: Avidemux 2.6: Unable to save selection as jpeg images

The tools I use work so I don't need avidemux.

Why can't you register on their forum? That's odd in itself.

What tools do you use to copy frames from a video and save them as jpeg images?

When I select the register button I get the message "An error has occurred", "Sorry registration is currently disabled."

I use VLC Player and the tutorial given.

In reply to: Avidemux 2.6: Unable to save selection as jpeg images

As to the registration issue, that's for Avidemux to fix. I don't work for them.

I saw your comment there

In reply to: Avidemux 2.6: Unable to save selection as jpeg images

It didn' t work for me either. Just empty folder. Trying to run it in admin mode gets a reject.

~ $ sudo vlc
[sudo] password for mint16:
VLC is not supposed to be run as root. Sorry.
If you need to use real-time priorities and/or privileged TCP ports you can use vlc-wrapper (make sure it is Set-UID root and
cannot be run by non-trusted users first).

No vlc-wrapper in my repository for download.

There's another post I did earlier that's yet to show up here, but in it I suggest Kino.

Ok, I don't understand this section of your email:

"~ $ sudo vlc
[sudo] password for mint16:

"No vlc-wrapper in my repository for download."

Your other post hasn't shown up yet. The official website for Kino indicated that the project is "dead" and that users should try alternative software.

Do you know if there is there any other software you can think of that's similar to Avidemux or doesn't nothing else exist?

Thanks.

ah, that part you didnt' understand

In reply to: Avidemux 2.6: Unable to save selection as jpeg images

was the message I got back in Linux Terminal when I attempted to start VLC in admin mode. It was telling me it wouldn't allow that, even though the site we visited claimed by doing exactly that the "stills" feature would then be available for use.

As for Kino, it's only one year out of development, so probably still do what you wanted. I see my other post has finally passed the filters or mods or whatever and there's a link to page 44 of the Kino manual. It seems to be exactly what you want to do.

correction;

In reply to: ah, that part you didnt' understand

On checking again, I see Kino quit development in 2009.

Kdenlive is the choice of many Linux users today, but I don't know that it does what you want. Sure, like any other video editor you can manually make some stills "clips" but I've not seen where it will make a still or grab a frame every second, half second, etc. automatically and dump them with one up number into a folder.

You can read it's manual here.

In reply to: correction;

I don't use Linux, but it looks like Kdenlive will also work on Mac OS. I'll take a closer look at the manual to see if Kdenlive will work. I saw a possible solution mentioned on a blog which would allow me to use Avidemux 2.6 after all. I haven't had a chance to try it yet, but it looks promising.

Thank you so much for all your help.

Is there an "Export image" capability?

In reply to: Avidemux 2.6: Unable to save selection as jpeg images

In GIMP that's where the jpg and other formats are found, may be the same for the program you are using. Of course there's always "Print Screen" key at the right spot and then save it to a file in other systems. Not in Mac?.

In reply to: Is there an "Export image" capability?

This might be a little long, so bare with me. I have a Mac with OS X Yosemite, ver. 10.10.5. I had been using Avidemux 2.5.4 to copy frames from MKV videos and save them as jpeg images. The program was working fine for a while, but started to quit. I ended up reinstalling it twice, but the problem returned. Now it won't work at all. It was suggested that I download the latest version which is 2.6. It turns out that version is time based not frame based, so I can't save my selection as jpeg images. I need jpeg images in order to make gifs in Photoshop. Print screen won't work since I need many images. That was the beauty of Advidemux. I could select a section of the video, copy it and then save as jpeg images. I have been searching the web for days for an answer to this problem, but I can''t find one. I have been unable to contact the developer or register for the Avidemux forum. I can't believe I'm the only person having this problem with Avidemux 2.5 and that the developer doesn't have a fix. I've also been searching for another program similar to Avidemux where I can copy frames from my videos. The programs I've found are only for Windows. I'm hoping a solution or another program for Mac exists. Thank you for your help.

so, you want to...

In reply to: Avidemux 2.6: Unable to save selection as jpeg images

...reverse the usual process of creating slide show or movies from still frames and instead have a movie which is reverse engineered into still frames? Is this method using Quicktime no longer available?

http://video.stackexchange.com/questions/4033/exporting-mov-vr-to-multiple-still-frames

In Linux I use "RecordMyDesktop" which allows to make full frame shots at whatever frame rate you set. It's for making those from whatever shows on the monitor. I've never tried to pull the individual frame shots from it though.

Other's have, using VLC or avconv in Linux.

KDEnlive is a good movie editing tool in most LInux distros that have the KDE desktop. (Ubuntu, Mint, Kubuntu, others) and I know you can make cuts sent to a photo file, but I don't think it will do multiple cuts automatically which is what it seems you want.

That's reverse engineering and you may have to search a bit more for that.

KINO is another Linux program, less intensive than Kdenlive, and it seems to do what you want. On page 44 of this manual it gives instructions on exporting "stills" to various image formats at timed intervals from a movie clip.

In reply to: so, you want to...

I've never used Quicktime. As I mentioned before I'm not very tech savvy, so programs like Avidemux were perfect for me. I'm learning more about this process thanks to all these emails. I don't use Linux, so will any of these options work with Mac OS? I haven't had a chance yet to take a look at the information you provided.

Thanks again for the help.
