AVIA DVD, DRC Adjustments and Color Saturation

This question may apply only to Sony owners since I don't know if other manufacturers call this adjustment "drc" Can anyone explain exactly what the Hell I am trying to accomplish here? A box appears with a ball that gets moved around. I didn't screw with it but it appears to be something that should improve picture quality if adjusted properly. Anyone understand DRC?

Also I noticed the factory default settings create bright, bright reds! WAY TOO RED! I adjusted this quite a bit towards the green spectrum. I am using the AVIA DVD to try to properly set up the picture but frankly the damn thing doesn't seem to "apply" to my TV. For example there are adjustments for black settings and no matter what I do the adjustments don't appear to correspond with what the DVD says should happen. Is this because of the LYCOS technology that Sony uses? I basically have given up using the AVIA dvd and started setting it up by eye using a 1080p DVD.
