.avi and media player

I have movies with the extension .avi and i cant play them in windows mediaplayer because it is requiring some X3 Player. I have played some of the movies in windows media player with .avi extension but some new movies which i have downloaded requires X3 player. Can anyone help me on this. i need to know where i can get x3 player for free ?
