AVG8.0 - frequent updates??

My AVG tray icon shows that it needs to be updated - sometimes 3 times every day. It seems as soon as I connect to the web, the AVG icon shows it needs updating..so I update it immediately..then later on during the day it again displays the update icon...then at night again the same thing. So I'm updating it 3 times daily?? Why the very frequent daily updates? Is there a way to disable this frequent updating and change update to - say twice a week?
Also, do these updates take up more and more disk space on my pc, thereby eating up my disk drive?? thanks for any suggestions.

have been issuing more updates than usual lately, not just AVG due to more threats than usual. It is ALWAYS a good idea to update whenever they are released or you will not be proteced against the most current threats.
