AVG Viral Infection: popcaploader.dll (file)

May 19, 2006 5:48AM PDT

My AVG scan showed the following results:

File:
popcaploader.dll
Result/Infection:
Adware Generic.NTR
Path:
C\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\popcaploader.dll

It shows as a Viral infection that is "healed", but it's been healed for the last 3 scans and it's still there. I ran Spysweeper and Spybot, but that didn't help. Also, I probably should have checked "potentially unwanted programs scan" in my AVG Resident Shield. Thay may have stopped me from receiving it. Anyway, what is it, do I need to get rid of it and how do I do that. I believe it was downloaded from MSN when I downloaded a new game.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions you gan give me I am about to loose my mind looking for answers.

Popcaploader.dll For Yahoo Games...
May 19, 2006 6:10AM PDT

t is a legal adware called PopCap Loader from PopCap Games company. It is a Web plug-in that provides Web update features. You should be able to easily remove it by eliminating the file from the location where it's been detected and by cleaning out the registry files as indicated in the link below. It is "adware" but is required to run various games on Yahoo and a few other sites. It will be reinstalled the next time you run the games.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Grif, I appreciate your help. I downloaded a game from MSN...Bejeweled 2...and probably got it from there. Is this really something that I need to remove? Will it cause me any problems with my computer or security? I'm a little nervous about doing anything with the registry files, I don't want to mess them up. Can I just restore to an earlier time?

If You're Going To Continue Playing The Game...
May 19, 2006 11:05AM PDT

...there's really no reason to remove the file. The next time you play the game, it will be reinstalled. It's not a major issue either way.

It's your choice.

Hope this helps.

Thanks again for your information. I haven't really used this site to ask questions in order to resolve issues I have with my computer, but I am sure glad I did this time. I received some great responses.

popcaploader

Popcaploader is a control from Popcap games. You probably played one of their games. Removal of the control will probably mean you won't be able to play that game. If you want to continue to play you will probably need that loader. You can download Ewido which should detect and remove if you desire.

Thanks byker49, I did download a game from MSN...Bejeweled 2....that's what probably caused it. What is "Ewido", and is it easy to use? I'm "clueless in florida"!!!!!!!

Thanks again.

...rhe DLL in question is fairly innocuous as adware goes. All it does is feed ads to you, and therefore doesn't have any really serious impact - it's not like it's going to totally hose your PC. And, as stated above, you'll get it as long as you play that game; you remove it, it comes back the next time you play.

As for Ewido, it's a malware scanner/remover. After 14 days, it disables its full time scanning routine, but you can run all the manual scans you please and keep it updated as well for free. It's a real good program and is completely compatible with AVG Anti-Virus (heck Ewido is now owned by Grisoft).

You can get it at http://www.ewido.net/en/

Thanks Paul,
I went to the website for Ewido and started to download but hesitated at the Active-X control. I guess I'll try it though since it's been recommended 3 times. I think part of my problem was that I had not checked "Scan Potentially Unwanted Programs" in the AVG Resident Shield.

By the way, what is a DLL file?

Thanks Paul for your help.

Fran.. The simplfied definition of dill files ..
May 27, 2006 5:01AM PDT

can be found here:

http://www.easydesksoftware.com/dll.htm

As they begin to say, 'A dynamic link library (DLL) is a collection of small programs, which can be called upon when needed by the executable program (exe) that is running. The DLL lets the executable communicate with a specific device such as a printer or may contain source code to do particular functions'. The further you look into it, the deeper the explanation. These 2 should cover ''the basics''.

or here:
http://www.helpwithpcs.com/jargon/dll.htm

I'll add my recommendation about Ewido Anti-Malware. It's good.. and it's easy. What more could you want? Cheap? That too. As has been noted, after the two week trial period, you can still continue to use it.

Have a good weekend..

Thanks Carol for the explanation of .dll files, it really helps a lot. I went into the two web sites and added them to my favorites lists, looks like they have a lot of great information. Also, thanks for the note on Ewido, I like good, easy, and I love a bargain!

Oct 15, 2006 1:03AM PDT

We got the popcaploader.dll also and I think it came from pogo.com, my wife periodly downloads games from them and its the only site she goes to so beware of the adware that comes with it.
I plan on getting serious with it and getting rid of it.

popcaploader
Jul 31, 2009 9:09AM PDT

I have visited pogo many times but have never seen popcaploader in any of my scans. I'm cleaning a laptop for friend right now and popcaploader came up along with bejeweled etc. and said the downloaded games (I think from MSN were probably packed with a trojan).
Any thoughts? I'm using Cureit. Also I think she had the AV virus and probably windows 2009 as well. Don't know if cureit will get 2009 but malwarebytes should.
Any thoughts?
Thanks

Yep, Try Running Malwarebytes And See How It Goes
Aug 1, 2009 8:52AM PDT

Remember that some of those malware types will occasionally block Malwarebytes from installing or running. If that's the case, rename the installer file to something else and after the program installs, access the Malwarebytes folder in "Program Files" and rename "mbam.exe" to something else as well.. It should run then.

Hope this helps.
