AVG TOP 5 weekly issues - August 9, 2011

Aug 8, 2011 10:21PM PDT
** Firefox 6 support **

We are happy to inform you that Firefox 6 support has been implemented and is available within the recently released AVG program update. Please update your AVG 2011 to program version 10.0.1391 (or newer) if you are using Firefox 6. Release notes can be found on this web page.

Should you encounter any trouble during the program update process, please perform AVG repair installation as described in the following FAQ articles:

Free FAQ #3003 (AVG Free Edition)

FAQ #3251 (AVG commercial versions)

** AVG Threat alert window **

Sometimes, AVG Free Edition users are confused by genuine web threat warning when it is displayed for the first time. A few concerned users asked whether this may be a rogue pop-up window on forums. Find an example of AVG Alert window.

Please note that AVG commercial versions display the same window with "LinkScanner alert" caption (instead of the "AVG Alert").

Together with this alert, you may note additional warning within the browser window itself.

Additional examples of AVG alert windows can be found in AVG documentation.

** AVG Safe Search affecting navigation to web pages **

Please note that an AVG Safe Search component may affect navigation to certain web pages in Internet Explorer unless all important operating system updates are installed. Please make sure to have your operating system fully up to date. More information about updating your Windows operating system can be found here.

In case you are experiencing any browsing issues with a fully updated system which can be resolved by disabling AVG Search Shield component, please contact AVG technical support for further investigation.

** AVG Free Edition uninstallation issues **

Sometimes, users are not able to remove AVG Free Edition completely using the standard uninstallation wizard. You may use specialized AVGremover utility if you face similar trouble.

If you are willing to provide us with diagnostic information which may help our developers to enhance the standard uninstallation wizard, please proceed as follows prior to using the AVGremover utility:

- Run the AVG uninstallation process either using the Windows Control Panel (Add or remove programs) or by clicking the Start Menu shortcut.
- In case the process fails, please gather AVG uninstallation log files and an msinfo output.
- Provide these data to AVG Forum moderators as described here.
- Run the AVGremover for complete AVG uninstallation.

** Master Boot Record rootkits **

Modern rootkits overwriting the Master Boot Record (MBR) may sometimes prevent the MBR sector from being fixed when the operating system is running (and the rootkit itself is active). In such case, the MBR needs to be overwritten with the host operating system offline. This can be done by the Windows recovery console.

Rewriting the MBR improperly may prevent the operating system from booting. We recommend performing this operation only if you are absolutely sure or if asked to do so by AVG technical support (detailed information will be provided in such case). More information about rewriting the MBR sector can be found in this AVG Free Forum article. After fixing the MBR sector, we strongly recommend running a full computer scan using updated AVG to remove possible infection remnants.

Please do not hesitate contacting AVG technical support in case an infection cannot be removed or is repeatedly coming back after its removal.
