AVG TOP 5 weekly issues - August 1, 2011

Jul 31, 2011 6:56PM PDT
** General update error **

A few users reported general error during AVG update in this week. Although a cause of the issue varies across the individual cases, the AVG repair installation will rectify the problem in most cases. More information about AVG repair installation procedure can be found in these FAQ articles:
AVG Free Edition: FAQ 3003
AVG commercial version: FAQ 3251
In case the issue is not rectified, please contact AVG technical support; AVG update log will be requested for detailed analysis.

** False positive alarms **

We noticed slightly more false positive alarms reported on forums in the past week. Anti-virus may detect a legitimate application sometimes when a part of its code is similar to a code in newly created malware. This situation happens from time to time with every anti-virus software. Even though AVG 2011 implements advanced anti-false mechanisms to minimize risk of false alarms, the situation may occur anyway. If you suspect an application has been detected incorrectly, please submit the respective file to our virus analysts. There are two options how to proceed:
A) Sending via web page http://samplesubmit.avg.com. Please note there is no feedback provided to sender in this case.
B) Sending via e-mail as described in this AVG Free Forum post. When a sample is analyzed, e-mail response is sent back to sender with result.
More information about false positive alarms is available in the above linked AVG Free Forum article.

** System boot process hangs on loading the AVGIDESH.SYS driver **

A few AVG users suspected the AVGIDESH.SYS driver is causing system boot freeze because this driver is listed as the last one loaded during the initial boot phase. The so far performed analysis suggested the issue is not caused by AVG in all cases. Brief overview of our findings can be found for example in this AVG Free Forum post.
To be able to investigate the issue thoroughly and to make sure AVGIDESH.SYS is not involved indeed, our developers requested full memory dump. Short guide on how to create such dump is available on AVG Free Forum. In case of any related questions, please contact AVG technical support.
A recent example of this situation can be found in this AVG Free Forum thread.

** System slowdown **

After installing a in background running software, like the antivirus, the system is to be expected to slow down as more system resources are being used continuously. While the slowdown is not apparent on new systems, it may be noticeable on slightly older systems. We strongly recommend checking hardware requirements before installing similar software. AVG Free Edition minimal and recommended system configuration can be found in this forum post.
Also, please note that running more resident security applications often slows the system down. It is recommended to use only one resident (on-access) security software. If you would like to install additional software, make sure to install only the on-demand components. Having more resident security modules running may even cause trouble when removing an infection detected, at the end of the day.
In case you would like AVG technical support agents to investigate a slowdown issue noticed after AVG installation, please do not hesitate to contact us.

** AVG update error on 64-bit systems **

Several AVG Free Forum visitors reported non-functional update process on their 64-bit systems. The update process seemingly stalls when analyzing downloaded update files. Based on the so far provided diagnostic data, the update installation process is "correctly" closed (prematurely). The issue may well be caused by a software conflict or possibly by a hidden infection. We were not yet able to induce this situation in our environment on 64-bit operating systems unfortunately. An update process crash dump needs to be investigated by developers.
Should you meet similar update issue, please contact AVG technical support or alternatively provide forum moderators with all needed information as described in this forum post.
