AVG-related boot hang

Jan 27, 2011 5:25AM PST

OS: XP
Acer Netbook, so no cd drive
installed the latest AVG as of Feb/March 2010, then applied weekly updates automatically

Occurred yesterday, after AVG updated and requested that I reboot my computer. As it booted up, it hung on a Windows loading screen (black background and Windows logo, not the one just prior to the login screen). After several minutes, I hard-shutdown the computer, then booted it normally and again with last known good, both with the same result. I tried the three Safe Mode boot options, and they all hung immediately after displaying AVGIDSEH.SYS driver. I then tried the other boot modes in the advanced boot options menu (debugging mode, etc.), and all hung at some point or another.

I made an AVG rescue USB, which didn't at first work, but worked once I re-downloaded the .rar and extracted it (occured as I wrote this post). At this point, I'm running a virus scan before renaming anything.

relations

It's possible, however unlikely, that this is not related to AVG, and could instead be related to something else I had done last time I was in Windows (I had downloaded a couple things, though I scanned them with AVG before doing anything with them, then again after extracting them) and I had installed Starcraft. However, none of those should have access to core system drivers

Hello Ddreigiau,

from my experiences (and reports on forums) this situation is caused by a driver or process, which is starting after AVG drivers. You can find some suggestions in related threads from CNET forums:
AVG 2011 avgidsh.sys Windows XP
AVG 2011 Update - AVGIDSH.SYS Crash on reboot
AVG Update today, comp won't boot

Our developers are highly interested in this situation and would be very grateful for AVG update log files*:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\avg10\log\avgupd.log
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\avg10\log\avgupdm.log

Please try to not remove them during restore procedures, pack them in an archive (zip file), upload to favourite online storage and provide us with link to it (or open my CNET profile and send the link through personal message).

Thank you for your cooperation

not fixed yet, but...
Jan 28, 2011 6:38AM PST

I haven't managed to fix the problem yet, but I can now get into the file system. The virus scan I mentioned earlier turned up 0 viruses, and 1 error, tho I don't know how to view that error.
I have a grand total of 0 experience with linux and ubuntu, though, so I don't know how to copy the files to a removeable drive with the rescue CD

Hello Ddreigiau,

AVG Rescue CD contains Midnight Commander which allows you to locate and copy files without any knowledge of linux system.

Thank you

Midnight Commander
Jan 30, 2011 11:02PM PST

picked up a USB version of Ubuntu 10.10, so I guess I just couldn't figure out MC. Anyway, I can copy/paste the files now; so I'll have to see if the site I'm planning on using will like the extensions (it limits what kinds of files you can upload - I may have to rename the type)
Anyway, I've got a friend with a copy of XP and a usb cd drive, so I'll try repairing the installation instead of a complete reinstall once I pull those files.

Re: The files

Hello Ddreigiau,

unfortunately provided files (avgemc.log, avgcsl.log) do not contain needed information from avgupd.log and avgupdm.log, which are needed for developers' analysis.

Is possible to provide us with requested files? What is the current situation?

Thank you

Hello Ddreigiau,

provided files have been passed to AVG developers for closer analysis.

We are still trying to find something common at affected computers - could you please describe your environment on the computer?
- used protection applications (except AVG)
- used firewall
- any other application you think is important
- has AVG requested restart to remove some infection? (in logs is request for restart due to program update)

Thank you for your cooperation

setup
Feb 2, 2011 11:29AM PST

-used to have McCafee, but uninstalled and disabled it (possible there's still something left; I don't recall how I uninstalled it)
-have been recently using AVG's firewall (or, if AVG free doesn't have a firewall, then it's Windows' Defender's)
-Google sketchup 7 & 8, IE8, Synaptics
-to remove an infection: no. to apply an update: yes. It asks to restart after every update, so I didn't think much of it. In fact, I've had surprisingly little in the way of virus/malware encounters in the past year.

Hello Ddreigiau,

thank you for the information. Could you please provide us with (compressed) content of the following folders for further analysis?
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\AVG10\Scanlogs\
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\AVG10\IDS\log\

More information on how to compress files can be found here.

Thank you.
