AVG problem

Feb 20, 2004 10:01AM PST

AVG seems to insist that I do a full system scan before it will deal with viruses.

I'll get virus alerts or scan a folder and it will find a virus. But it just tells me that I have the virus and should do a full system scan. This is a real bummer for me. I got two hard drives full of alot of stuff. To scan both of these hard drives is very time consuming. Its frusterating to have to scan both hard drives just to get AVG to deal with a virus even when it already knows exactly where the virus is.

Is there a way to get avg to handle this better? Or a better antivirus program that isnt programmed so dumbly? I mean if it finds a virus it should attempt to deal with it right then. Not just tell me to do a full scan on both of my very large harddrives..

Its not about any particular virus

I've dealt with various viruses it finds. Typically by doing what it wants and doing a full hard drive scans. But im sick of the stupid way it handles things. Know of any better antivirus programs?

Plus I have tried to manually delete files it finds infected sometimes only to get the additional headache of a popup warning me that the file is infected every time I right click it to delete it. Plus I typically have to track down the files it finds infected. Not always a easy task.

Understand you on this because I have 2 HDD too in one of my PC and it's a real time-consuming to allow full system scan by an AV or Anti-trojan or Anti-spyware but we should allow it because most AV vendor/author recommend this to make sure all files are clean or uninfected by the infected file. Some AV, Anti-trojan and anti-spyware programs is using Smartscan engine which scans only IMPORTANT system files or new files (changed or added) after the last run/scan.

Other AV like NAV or Panda want a full system scan too but NAV is not programmed to "insist" to user to run the full system scan just to clean an infected file. It will automatically scan after a week after first install (unless the user changed the scheduled task).

Try online scan to clean the virus if you do not want AVG to run full system scan. Maybe when the virus is cleaned by other AV, AVG will calm down Wink

Know of any free antivirus programs that remove viruses without a complete scan?

By nav do you mean norton? I actually bought norton. Only to find it can really suck. When it encounters viruses embeded in a webpage it often cant do anything to it. A pop up alerting you comes up but the only option it will typically accept is to ignore the virus. There tech support is terrible as well.

So know of any free antivirus programs without the avg flaw or even perhaps recommend a pay antivirus thats not norton and doesnt charge for updates after a certain time.

know of anybody who is somewhat pregnant?.
an AV is only as good as you let it be and AVG does have a setting that will allow you to scan ALL drives.
I have 3 drives on my PC and going for a second H/D.
if you want a clean PC you must allow the AV to do what it is built to do.
of course you can also practice prevention by not opening infected e-mail or going to websites that are infected, but that is your choice and decision to make.
you can also let the virus reside on your PC because you do not have the time to let a full scan run.
all I can say to that is thank goodness YOU are NOT in my address book.

Custom Test
Feb 20, 2004 11:15PM PST

I do a system wide search for the file in question and simply run a custom test and browse to that dir and run the test on that one dir. only. Then AVG offers to handle the viri. I right click on my download dir and recently downloaded files and run it on each as well. Same thing, it offers to rid me of the problem.

HI: you do not have to scan BOTH hard drives with AVG..
All you have to do is go to the console and at the TEST tab at the top select custom then select the drive you want to scan...usually yoour main drive C:\ usually although not always...lolol
good luck..

Maybe I am not looking correctly but I do not find those choices in AVG 6.0.593 free version. Where did I go wrong?

Thanks!

In the free version AVG 6.0.593 right click the icon in your system tray and choose Run AVG-Antivirus. After it opens at the top menu right next to Program choose Tests and then choose Custom Test. Under the Tests menu I have three options: complete test, custom test and removable media test.

I normally just use the right click context menu though and choose what I want to check, either a file or a directory or whatever.

If you are using windows xp or windows me then you need to purge the restore folder after you have run the anti virus and before you reboot your computer. Avg will tell you that it has found a virus in the restore folder but it is unable to clean it.This applies to all anti virus software.Hope this is of some help to you

just last night AVG found a trojan when i hit a "bikini babe" site(My mistake, best to stick to victorias secrect,) but back to the virus, the AVG software said i should do a full system scan, not that i had too. i scanned, after 2 minutes; it found the trojan, i canceled the scan, and AVG removed it. It is my experiance that AVG is simply the best. i have used Norton, MaFee, Panda, and more. in fact, i ran Norton 2002 and AVG for sometime together, everytime Norton found something,AVG would pop up at the very same time with virus found. sometimes the best things in life are free...But to get back to your issue, just scan 'till AVG finds the virus, then cancel. I would really scan both your drives at at least once or twice a week. In closing AVG works perfect with Microsoft Outook and Express. I am an networking student in Louisiana, by the way, and have never talked with anyone from AVG. good luck, PaulMcCullen@msn.com
