AVG Issues

I have been running AVG forever and a day, and have never had any issues with it.
I run Win XP and was running AVG ver 8.
I was tempted to upgrade to Ver 9 free version, which I did.

I am now getting messages on a daily basis telling me the free version runs out in 30 days, 29 days etc etc.

I do not want to purchase Ver 9 as I was quite happy with the performance of Ver 8.

Can I get back to Ver 8, and stop all these messages from AVG?

There is one particulkar message which comes through which you cannot shut down. You just get the message Cannot close, as application is locked by the system. Unfortuately everything locks up and avgtray.exe takes over the system.
Only way to get out of it is to shut down.
That cannot be right can it?

Any suggestions as what to do?

Any other free anti virus programs that are recomended?

Did you try re-installing AVG Free Editon v9.0.730? If not, it's the fist thing I would try. Follow the " AVG 9.x Uninstall / Re-Install Instructions". Especially making sure to use the "AVG uninstall/cleanup utilty", prior to the installation.

If the above doesn't help, I would further suggest posting at CNET's AVG Forum. The mods and members there, may be more familiar with the issues you're referring to. I've never used AVG and don't know much about it.

You asked about other free A/V's. Avira's AntiVir and Avast are both widely used and recommended.

Carol, thanks for your reply. I did not know there was an AVG forum.
On having a quick look, it is obvious there are many issues with 9.0

I will transfer my note over to that forum

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
