AVG Install Fail "File Corrupt"

Feb 7, 2011 5:47AM PST

PC: Compac Presario 2175US (laptop), Win XP Pro, Firefox.

PC was restored via factory restore discs (including Norton 2003, among with all the usual other factory junk). Connected to web and updated Win XP with SP 2 and SP 3.

Tried to install AVG via internet. Got message "extraction failed" "file is corrupt".

Ran Malwarebytes. It found "1 Registry Data Items Infected" with "PUM.Hijack.StartMenu" and deleted it.

Tried to install AVG via internet. Got message "extraction failed" "file is corrupt".

PC disconnected from internet since this time.

Downloaded the full 147 Mb AVG (free) file to a flash drive (using another PC) and attempted to install. Same error message.

Ran the Norton uninstall tool. Ran the AVG uninstall tool, just in case.

Downloaded the 147 Mb AVG file to a flash drive (again, in case it really was corrupted) and attempted to install on P2175. Same error message.

Any advice on how to proceed from here would be appreciated.

Hello Glasser001,

Please check used hard drive and memory modules for errors. Then you can check consistency of downloaded file according to MD5 hash from this website.

What is the current situation?

Thank you

AVG File

Thanks for your reply.

Checked hard drive: No problem.

Checked memory. It ran 8 times and reported 100% function.

Checked hash number between copies of AVG (147 Mb):
All 3 copies (on good PC, on flash drive, on subject PC) checked with each other.

Then downloaded fresh copy and it differed (hash number) with the copy from yesterday, but had the same name.

Loaded fresh copy to PC and it installed. Tried to use it to scan PC before connecting to internet, but it apparently will not scan PC unless I let it connect...

Is this the way it is supposed to work?

Hello Glasser001,

if you have used offline installation file and installed AVG (AVG is running in Windows tray), there should be no problem with running AVG scan. Maybe it is related with failed update procedure, which is automatically started after successful installation.

What is showed during the attempt to scan computer?
Please be informed that first scan after installation has 2 parts - optimization scan (creating basic cache) and then the chosen scan.

Thank you

AVG Customization

Thanks much for the info.

After allowing it to connect to the internet, AVG "took over" the PC for maybe 30 or 45 minutes, including the first scan and what appeared to be further updating activity.

That PC runs at 1.7GHz, but only has 500Mb RAM, and it is noticeably slower now...

Are there parts of AVG that can be disabled to allow the PC to work faster? For example, I have no need for a program to analyze every web page for phishing attacks as I trust my knowledge and habits in that area. Ditto on email scanning, and so on. I just want basic protection against hack attacks, spyware and virus installation.

Hello Glasser001,

in case of this computer performance and your trust in knowledge (experiences), I would recommend to run the installation file again, choose "Add or remove components" option in the installation wizard and untick these options in the list:
- E-mail Scanner protection
- Identity Protection
- LinkScanner (then do not allow AVG Toolbar installation), but it is not fully recommended, as the exploits are more and more advance in these days

Thank you
