AVG 'Handholding Message' on Email

Dec 31, 2005 12:00AM PST

Win XP home

On my Win 98SE I get the 'Handholding Message' on Email transmitted and received. I do not get either message on this XP computer although AVG is configured to perform the task.

I would appreciate instructions how to make the XP provide the same function.

Thanks

AVG---

Using Outlook Express. The message reads "No virus found in this incoming message" or "No virus found in this outgoing message".

Both are AVG defaults.

Need More?

Thanks

AVG again---

Here is a copy of an Outlook Express Email sent from my Win98SE:

Cletus29... no solution but my experience
Dec 31, 2005 2:21AM PST

My OS is XP and Outlook Express and like you no message is printed at the bottom of outgoing e-mails; however, the AVG e-mail scanner popups up in the lower right screen. So I can only assume the scan is being done on outgoing messages but no printed record is made on the e-mail itself.

All incoming e-mails have the AVG scanned message appended to the bottom of each e-mail. I feel what you are seeing, or not seeing, is normal for XP systems.

Hope this helps! E-mail me if you find different.

No problem here
Dec 31, 2005 5:10AM PST

XP Pro, and it was posting all that on outgoing messages, and incoming.
It's okay on incoming, but I don't want it on outgoing, since I keep the system clean I disabled scanning outgoing messages.
I'd done the same thing with Norton, but with Norton it was because it limited me to 4 outgoimg at a time.

this is standard

u say you are not getting these messages when you use XP.

By that I suspect you are using the mail function in the browser?

The XP default mail handler in browser is Microsoft Outlook.

You could change that to Outlook Express. Go to Tools>Internet Options >Programs and change the email to Outlook Express.

Send an email to yourself and have a look to see if you see the incoming email scanner message.

If not post back.

AVG handholding----
Dec 31, 2005 3:15AM PST

I use Firefox as my default browser on both the 98SE and the XP computers and MSOE on both for email.

If I bring up the AVG Control Center and click on ''Email Scanner Properties'' I get a window that says the installed plugins are ''MS Outlook Extension'', but there is no choice to change to Outlook Express.

This is maybe a small item, but in this Internet Enviroment today, the notice that emails have been checked
gives my correspondents a warm feeling---

Next Suggestion--and thanks for the help

you need to change your OE setting
Dec 31, 2005 4:55AM PST

In OE go to tools>accounts>properties>general and change the name of the server to 'personal email'.

apply close and back out.

Also open your AVG Control Centre and click on email scanner>properties>configure.

Change that to E-mail scanner.

Apply and close and test it.

You should have both incoming and outgoing mail certified as scanned.

Did what you suggested, but still no joy---

I think I will give it up on this XP and send my emails from the WI-FI connected Win98SE.

It is a puzzle though--it does work on your XP?

Thanks for the try---

Worked first on Win98SE

then worked on XP and still continues to do so.

there also is an AVG Forum.

Why not post there and post back with the solution?

Problem solved---everything working now
Jan 1, 2006 1:33PM PST

I spent hours running down my problem scanning Email with AVG, but I am in my late 70s and slowing a bit.

My problem, I believe, was more serious than just not getting the certification text on my Emails---I don?t think I was scanning the Emails at all.

Copied from the AVG forum:
---The problem posed---
?I just installed the free version of AVG.

Everything appears to be working fine except scanning of outgoing emails. Under statistics, ''emails sent'' remains at ''0''. Also, while my incoming messages receive the certification text, nothing shows up on my outgoing mail.

I am currently using Outlook Express.?

----The answer that worked for me---
?Go into the Email Scanner -> Properties -> Servers tab and look at the info for the SMTP server to see if its set to active?

I removed AVG, downloaded and installed the program again and made the SMTP server active and I now show, in statistics, that my Emails sent and received are properly scanned. I also am getting the certification message on both incoming and outgoing Emails.

There are many questions posed on the AVG Email forum. It is worth some time spent if you have any doubts that AVG is doing all you think it is.

Glad you were able to resolve the issue.

Thank you for the 'heads up' on the SMTP being inactive.

Have been using AVG for about 6 years starting with the old AVG 6.0 and then the beta email scanner.

SMTP was always active so that would never have occured to me.

Happy surfing.

Cletus29, good job....

Thanks for your reply and solution. This intrigues me so I saved your instructions. A question for you... after removal of AVG and in the new install process where or when are you given the option to set SMTP server to "active". That part is a little confusing to me and I hesitate to remove the present AVG without a better understanding of the procedure. I can see you worked long and hard at this!

Can you help in clearing up this part for me?

Thanks,

Glenn

Wow! Thanks Cletus29 for posting the problem

Great job on finding the solution. I didn't know I had a problem until I read this thread. To clarify for Glenn your solution, try the following: Select Email Scanner/click Properties, Plugins tab/click Properties, Servers Tab/select SMTP/click modify, put a check mark on "activate this server and use for sending/receiving email", OK everything
Good Luck

Followed your instructions without any difficulty so SMTP is now showing ''active''; however, upon sending a test e-mail to myself no message is appended to the bottom of the e-mail that indicates it was scanned as an outgoing message. What am I missing here? Under ''Test Options'' both incoming and outgoing E-mail settings are checked along with ''Certify Mail'' The certification message is appended to the incoming mail but not the outgoing mail.

Thanks for you input and assistance.

Happy New Year!

I have the settings at automatic for both POP3 and SMTP.
Jan 2, 2006 2:42AM PST

Referencing this, put a check mark on ''activate this server and use for sending/receiving email''.

Hope this will work for you as well as I get both incoming and outgoing with the AVG certification.

Thank you David!

Mine is set with both active the same as yours. Don't fully understand what this means as I do not see any confirmation that an outgoing e-mail has been scanned by appending the expected certification at the bottom of the e-mail.

Thanks much!

Hi Larry,... me either!
Jan 2, 2006 3:04AM PST

I have had AVG for ages it seems... never aware of that setting and always took AVG defaults. Still do not fully understand it nor know if mine is scanning outgoing mail. Probably doesn't much matter... I am clean unless some someone hijacks me. Anyway others if they are not already should be scanning their incoming mail. In the meantime I have POP3 and SMTP set as active.

Temp is 72F here today... better keep you eye on the weather!

Happy New Year!
