AVG free: firewall issues

Jan 5, 2006 2:50PM PST

let me first off state that this inst for me this is for a friend of mine who i talk with online. she got back from vacation to find her computer acting up and had someome say it would be $200 to get it fixed... well updated to AdAware Se and that took care of some of the problems but now AVG's acting up...

i use a dialup internet connection so i dont know much about firewalls and how to work around them. AVG wont connect to the update server. i checked the documentation grisoft had for working with firewalls but it didnt list what she had... she's got a compaq S6100nx so it's a decent computer for the most part though it came with norton antivirus 04 and personal firewall 2003. as i understand firewalls it's the personal firewall that's causing the trouble. i'm debating about having her completey scrap norton AV as its' outdated as is, hence wanting to get AVG going on that computer... but that's another topic.

so anyone know how to get AVG to work around that firewall or will i have to have her scrap that one too and get zone alarm? i assume that'd be the prefered/most cost effective choice.

i've had her make sure AVG will work with the XP firewall so that's set up to work according to what i read from grisoft's documentation on firewalls.

Firewall
Jan 5, 2006 3:25PM PST

Hi,

Your friend should uninstall Norton Antivirus 2004 and Norton Personal Firewall 2003 because it is not supported anymore. No updates is provided by Symantec to unsupported version like NPF 2003 and NAV 2004 unless your friend subscribe for the updates. If she didn't, tell her to remove those products.

After removal, make sure XP Firewall is enabled then try to connect to AVG update servers.

You can also install another firewall like Kerio, Outpost, jetico or ZoneAlarm but I suggest to try to do the above first to find out whether it's a firewall issue or not.

i will have her do that... i assume the normal add/remove programs will have both of them, or are there uninstall programs that came with both of them that she should use instead?

spyware begone?
Jan 6, 2006 7:09PM PST

ever heard of that one? i did a quick search of download.com and came up empty for that one. was thinking about having her get rid of that one in favor of a tandem of AdAware SE and spybot S&D with possibly microsoft's anti-spyware tossed in. that program (spyware begone) apparently says she's got spyware on her computer but it cant remove it and AdAware didnt pick it up and i had her do a full system scan yesterday to start cleaning things up. so what do you think should i have her get rid of that one too?

I would NOT do that if I were you

You didn't find it at Download.com because it's on Eric Howe's ''Rogue List''. Click on this link and look for it on the list. It's BAD news so I would stay away from it.
http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm#products

You idea of Spybot S&D, Ad-Aware SE, and Microsoft AntiSpyware are good for starters. I would also tell her to use this. This has a free 14 day trial period but will remain free after the 14 days. You only lose the process guard and the automatic updating but you can still update manually.

You may not need the log but save it anyway.

Dowload link http://www.ewido.net/en/

* Install ewido anti-malware
* When installing, under ''Additional Options'' uncheck ''Install background guard'' and ''Install scan via context menu''.
* Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
* The program will now go to the main screen

You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.

* On the left hand side of the main screen click Update
* Then click on Start Update

The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/updates/

Once the updates are installed do the following:
* Click on scanner
* Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
* While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK
* When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says ''Perform action on all infections'' then choose clean and click OK.
* Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
* Click Save report.
* Save the report .txt file to your desktop.

Now close ewido anti-malware.

yea thought as much

like i said when we get back around to making changes to the computer i'll have her get rid of that one. i found it rather suspicious that i dint find it on here as i can usually find just about anything on here... there's also another ap that i'm debating about having her take off later too... it's basically an anti-spam program but all her email is web based(hotmail, netscape,etc) so i dont really think that one is necessary.

but yea i figured the duo of Spybot 1.4 and AdAware would be a pretty good combo. the reason i onyl went with those or figured thsoe 2 would do it is i've been running microsoft's antispyware for a while now and it hasdnt found a thing. spybot typically doenst either as i use ad-aware first and that seems to catch pretty much everything. so i figured a dual layer of AdAware SE ad spybot SD would be fine.

Keep the Microsoft one also, they

all look for different things and that one has realtime protection besides the scanner.
