AVG forum: AVG TOP 5 weekly issues - July 4, 2011

Jul 3, 2011 5:04PM PDT
** Blackhole Exploit Kit detected on Google-analytics **

Another AVG Free Forum user was facing repetitive detections of Blackhole Exploit Kit (type 2023) on various web pages. Seemingly a Google-analytics script was infected, which is very unlikely scenario. Quick check revealed that the remote system serving the "Google-analytics" script does not belong to Google. User requests to Google analytics were simply rerouted to a rogue server by poisoned DNS records. Using well-known safe DNS servers and flushing the DNS cache resolved the situation.
More details can be found in this AVG Free Forum post.

** Gifts on Facebook **

One of our users reported issues when sending or receiving virtual gifts on Facebook. The issue seems to be rectified by disabling AVG Surf-Shield. In case you have experienced similar situation (which was rectified by disabling AVG Surf-Shield under the LinkScanner component), please provide us with more information in this AVG Free Forum thread or contact AVG technical support.

** False positive alarms **

Anti-virus may detect a legitimate application sometimes when a part of its code is similar to a code in newly created malware. This situation happens from time to time with every anti-virus software. Even though AVG 2011 implements advanced anti-false mechanisms to minimize risk of false alarms, the situation may occur anyway. If you suspect an application has been detected incorrectly, please submit the respective file to our virus analysts.

There are two options how to do so:
A) Sending via web page http://samplesubmit.avg.com. Please note there is no feedback provided to sender in this case.
B) Sending via e-mail as described in this AVG Free Forum post. When a sample is analyzed, e-mail response is sent back to sender with result.
More information about false positive alarms is available in the above linked AVG Free Forum article.

** ARP attacks not blocked by AVG Firewall **

One of Facebook users mentioned, that ARP spoofing attacks (by Netcut) does not seem to be blocked by AVG firewall. We have immediately checked several scenarios and provided short guide on how to configure AVG Firewall properly to prevent these attacks:
- Open the AVG user interface and press F7.
- Click the IDS item in the left tree.
- Tick the Block port scan and Block ARP attacks options.
- Now, select all profiles you want to use this feature with one by one.
- Make sure that both the Use Trusted Database for this profile and Enable IDS options are enabled in the used profiles.
- Click OK to save the configuration.
- Restart the compute (the system needs to be restarted in order to make the ARP protection functional).

** General update error **

A few users reported general error during AVG update in this week. Although a cause of the issue varies across the individual cases, the AVG repair installation will rectify the problem in most cases.

More information about AVG repair installation procedure can be found in these FAQ articles:
AVG Free Edition: FAQ 3003
AVG commercial version: FAQ 3251
In case the issue is not rectified, please contact AVG technical support; AVG update log will be requested for detailed analysis.

Here is a new issue that is getting OLD real fast.
Jul 19, 2011 7:33AM PDT

I decided to try AVG Internet Security.
The problem is that the license will not activate, they have given me 3 new numbers, had me un-intall the software and re-install it, which just created a pop up screen that keeps coming up to remind me that my install key has changed, it will not go away. I bought a 3 pack from Sam's Club and I am sending Sam's Club a formal complaint also.
After several email and phone calls, AVG has kindly offered to log into my computer and fix the problem if I PAY them for premium service. Otherwise it is wait and see what happens. This has to be the bottom of the user barrell. I own a software developement company and this is no way to do business. Currently is look like I have just thrown my money away with this purchase!

Recieved an email today on the above problem.
Jul 20, 2011 1:33AM PDT

AVG had me delete some registry entries and re-enter the key they providers. It did not fix the problem. I am still getting the popup screen over and over again telling me that my license number has changed and I am still getting a License Number: Not Activated.
At least they got back to me and did not ask to be paid to fix the faulty software they sold me.
I am sending this to PCWorld Magazine for their help in resolving this problem. I just wish that I could get my $75 bucks back and move on to another AV program.
Ron
