AVG Email Scanner Popup

by eddie11013 / February 24, 2006 12:03 AM PST

I was over at my sister's house yesterday doing the income tax thing online, and every few minutes the AVG Email Scanner would popup at the lower right end of the screen. She is on a dial up. I have the same AVG program on my cable modem and its rare that I see this pop up. Is there some setting I can adjust or maybe reinstall the program? She has an HP computer, Windows ME, and I plan on running all the antispyware and antivirus programs that she has, however in the past her computer has always been clean. She does very little surfing, just email and sometimes uses the word program. I seem to recall that when AVG first came out, we used to see this popup all the time and then maybe it got fixed.
Thanks for any advice.

Eddie, I still get the popup...
by glenn30 / February 24, 2006 12:47 AM PST

Am on dial-up with Win XP O/S. The frequency depends on how often the e-mail client is set to check for mail. I do not know why you do not see the same but speculation is your high speed IT connection may be so fast that its hardly noticeable.

The popup does not bother me and lets me know its working. HTH

I don't know what programs you are going to run.but you might want to add Ewido
Home page

You could also try this

1. Download the latest AVG Free installation package from Home page
2. Run the AVG Free install file
3. Choose the Repair option and follow the setup wizard
4. Restart your computer then test

If it gets to annoying

I can tell you how to turn off the notification window.
AVG Control Center/E-Mail Scanner/Properties/Plugins/Properties/
uncheck in Progress/show window and/or icon

I just left my sisters house, and even tho the AVG control center said it was 7.1.375 268.0.0/268, just like mine, her "control center" was the old one that did not display the Email Scanner. I downloaded and installed the new one that display's the email scanner in the control center. Next time I go to her house I will try what you stated, Tom, regarding the "show notification icon" & "show information window".
Thanks again Guys,

Hi, Eddie. I Often See the AVG ''Pinwheel''. If You....
by tobeach / February 24, 2006 2:51 PM PST

have ticked ''Certify out going mail'' you will get it anytime you mail has an attachment. It doesn't pop-up if sending straight text. Basically, it's scanning your outgoing attachment so it can certify on bottom of mail that it was clean and will include what definition # & date you're updated to at time of sending. This gives reassurance to recipient and also may let them know (hopefully to let you know) if your AVG has been disabled by a malware since the def date could be way out of date.
One guy I notified always used auto update daily & didn't realize his wife had changed it to manual update 6 week before!!
Some malware will disable but leave it appearing functional so you don't catch on right away.
Your sister was probably submitting various documents for taxes & each needed to be scanned on way out.
I would worry if I didn't see it now & then. Grin
P.S: If you disconnect from net before pinwheel is finished, mail will not have been sent. This often happens on dial-up if the "hang up connection upon closing" box is checked. Grin

I like the Pinwheel much better than popups
by eddie11013 / February 25, 2006 6:02 AM PST

I went to my sister's house today and did what Tom suggested, which was to go to the AVG Control Center/E-Mail Scanner/Properties/Plugins/Properties/
in Progress/uncheck "show information window". Now there is no interference on the 'display' screen, and you just see the pinwheel doing its thing, whenever.
Thanks for the info Tobeach. Her computer seems to be working fine, after I did a defrag.
Thanks again,

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
