AVG download needs Roxio/driver upgrades, please help

by RubyShoe / February 18, 2008 11:37 AM PST

I am unable to download AVG 7.5 due to problems with an older version of Roxio Creator. When I tried to download AVG, an error message said that AVG Installer detected an outdated version of Roxio Easy CD Creator (Creator 5 Basic), which can cause problems with AVG 7.5, and it linked to a Roxio update site. Clicking on the Roxio update resulted in an error which ?was likely caused by: Roxio?s CDR4 (cdr4_xp.sys)?. A link there to ?an update available that may correct the problem?, led to updatecdr4_53_71.exe saved on my desktop, but it does not run successfully. It complains ?This updater is degined for CDR4 Drivers 7.1 and above?. How should I proceed from here? Can CDR4 Driver 7.1 be downloaded from somewhere? Or should I try another free anti-virus software? I have a Dell Dimension 8200 desktop with Intel Pentium 4 Processor and Windows XP Pro V.2002, SP2 OS. Thanks.

Roxio software

I found a thread at the AVG Forum:

The warning actually does not apply to your system.. AVG only knows that it finds the Roxio files.. it can't tell which version they are so it mentions that it MAY apply.

On the otherhand... you should still update your version of Roxio... the latest version is for the 5.x versions ... remember there is both a Platinum and Basic versions so do not get the wrong one... see [www.roxio.com]

Here is the Roxio site:

Easy CD Creator Basic Updates
Updates Easy CD Creator 5.x.x Basic and Starter Kit to 5.3.5

Some options to try.

First create a System Restore point in case an undesireable effect resluts.

Run the AVG install in spite of the warning if that is possible.

Download and click on the Update But if you do not have Roxio installed the Update probably will not help.

Look in Add/Remove Programs. If Nero or Roxio is listed and you are not using either of these, then remove them and restart the computer.

or download and run

Create a System Restore or other reliable backup for in the event the result is undesireable. Go to Start > Run > type "regedit" w/o the quotes. Navigate to
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\BsUDF. In the right hand pane make sure that Start is set to a data setting of 4. If not, double click on Start and change the Value data to the number 4 and make sure Base is set to "Hexidecimal". Then close the registry and restart the computer.

Hope something here proves helpful.
