Avg Antivirus Free Edition- Update connection problem
Dec 17, 2008 12:28PM PST

Here is the exact message I get when I try to update Avg. Free.

UPATE FAILED

Ther connection with update server failed, Please follow these steps;

* Make sure your Internet connection is active,
Please try to open the www.avg.com website

* Try to run the update later or schedule an automatic
update for another time.

* Make sure the connection parameters are set properly.

I have also uninstalled the avg. free several timesa and re-installed another avg set up and nothing helps, this is not the only program that does this I have tried another antivirus from CNET downloads called Avira Antivirus and when downloading the program I get the same message, and all this time I am all ready on the Internet

Connection issue........AVG
Oct 1, 2009 6:33PM PDT

I have a very similar problem. WindowsXP. DSL internet connection. When I attempt to install AVG Antivirus Free Edition (for the first time - I've just removed Norton360 prior to install of AVG), the installer stops with a 'Connection issue' - The AVG setup is not able to detect a working internet connection. Please make sure you are connected.....I am connect, and I even have another internet window open on www.avg.com - the site I believe it is looking for. If I save the installer first, and then run it from my hard disk, I get the same problem, although you can get it to install, but ofcourse you cannot register or get any updates, and in my case my internet connection then stopped working for some reason. I uninstalled AVG to get me back to where I am now, with a working internet connection, but no virus protection, and this odd installer error with AVG Antovirus Free - can anyone help?

Sorry.

But while I can try that is all I can do. The prior install of Norton is a recurring story. It expires and Norton installs deeply into this OS so be sure you used not only their install tool but their removal tool. Here's a search for that -> http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&source=hp&q=Norton+Removal+Tool

A reboot is best after that so good luck.

That worked - thank you.....

Bob - thank you so much - you are absolutely right. I must confess I thought I knew better - I had used Windows Add/Remove Programs to remove Norton, and searched the registry and deleted any reference to Symantec or Norton, and also ran clean up's from CCleaner and AMLeg Cleaner, and thought this was enough - no visible evidence of Norton anywhere - but it wasn't enough. Yesterday I ran the NortonRemovalTool and now everything is okay. I have now loaded AVGFree without problems.
The really odd thing about this problem is that you are not even able to reload Norton - unable to creat account / can't connect to internet / can't run updates......so if you remove Norton with add/remove programs you are then unable to reload it properly......that surely is an own goal from Norton? Anyway Bob, thanks again......there must be loads of people suffering this problem

Sorry for the typo but you got the message.

I agree with you. Symantec is panned by me often over this issue. Which one? "The internet access dies when their product expires."

Glad I helped you even if I had a typo there.
