AVG 9.0 Free install not recognizing internet connection

by mweist / December 12, 2009 1:48 AM PST

I'm running Windows XP with MS IE 8 and every time I try to install the AVG Free 9.0 program, it says it can not detect my internet connection, even though all my other internet-based programs are running fine (including downloading the avg software from the cnet site). Any ideas what is causing the problem? Thanks, Mike W.

can't access full installation file
by faerseraph / December 15, 2009 10:19 AM PST

I tried the link with both IE and Google Chrome browsers, but I'm unable to access them. Maybe my computer's security levels are so out-of-date I can't access the site? (I can't get to microsoft.com, etc. most likely for this reason)

..that's why I'm trying to download the anti-virus software! Please help.

I ended up being able to use the link the AVG staffer gave me.

I was also able to figure out how to flush my DNS cache to allow me to access sites like microsoft.com, etc.

I will def keep your suggestion if my computer ever gets too disastrous! Thank you.

AVG 9 Free is screwing up the Ethernet stack
by Jeffin90620 / December 16, 2009 2:01 PM PST

Along with many other people, I use DVArchive on my PC in concert with my ReplayTV DVR.

DVArchive can move shows from the DVR to my computer for archiving, or stream shows to my computer to watch.

With AVG V8, this wasn't a problem. However, with V9, the Ethernet stack on the PC is corrupted over the course of a few minutes and will not work until the computer is rebooted.

I suspect that this is related to the problem you are seeing and is probably the result of moving huge files over the network.

AVG Free 9 does not install on windows xp pro
by cmdigitalmedia / January 9, 2010 8:16 PM PST

In the past two weeks I ended up somehow with a virus. I had avg 8 at the time. I tried to get rid of it with avg to no avail. I did manage to reset the computer before it happened and uninstalled some newer programs and it works fine now.

However, I decided to upgrade AVG... but have been trying for two weeks to upgrade to free 9, and it will not install. I keep getting the same error message over and over.

Something about MSVC Redistributable error.... ??
I have tried multiple times and it gets to where it installs 3rd party applications and then it just dies... what is going on? Do I need to quit using AVG? I have used AVG and recommended it to 100s of friends, family, clients, and yet... I am beginning to have doubts..

Help?

Possibly related problem
by Jeffin90620 / January 10, 2010 2:55 AM PST

Dusan,

Is AVG aware of the problem regarding home networks that popped up with V9?

I and many other people have lost the ability to transfer large files (more than a few hundred megabytes). The transfer starts and fails, at which time the computer cannot use the network (even to connect to the router). If we terminate AVG9, the problem does not occur, and it did not happen with V8.

Regards,

Jeff

Hi,

which AVG components did you disable to solve the issue? Was it LinkScanner?

Have you checked the situation when "AVG Network Redirector" driver in Device Manager (show hidden devices -> in "Non-plug and play drivers") is disabled?

Please be informed that known issues with this driver will be solved in next cumulative program update.

Thanks

I went thru all the steps you indicated three times. I downloaded the file from the AVG link you indicated.

I even downloaded the 'error' fix that was supposed to be on my computer (The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable. Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'vcredist.msi' in the box below.) Really? And where pray tell do I find that?

I still get the error: MSVC Redistributables installation failed. Installation of AVG can not continue.

Sounds to me like part of the program in the AVG 9 Free edition is missing, and rather than fix it, the user is supposed to fix it themselves. I realize its free and we get what we pay for, but there are multiple logs, blogs, forums about this error and AVG has never been this difficult before.

I thought about downloading the paid version, but then figured if I cannot even get the free version to install, why should I pay for something that likely won't install \either.

I guess the SOLUTION is to download Norton or some other program and quit using and recommending AVG?

MSVC redist error

yeah, you are really not getting it...

In reply to: MSVC redist error

I tried yesterday, and again today to go to MS and download, the MSVC thing and it cannot find the necessary code on my computer. I do not have Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 on my computer, because hello there is a newer version, and why AVG would choose to update their software using old formats is beyond me.

I have never had any trouble with any other versions of AVG ever. I am talking going back at least five years, maybe further, on at least 15 different computers. As I am sure you are aware, somehow even web designers get asked to fix people's computer problems.

I have always recommended AVG, but when multiple people are having this same problem, (look it up on google) then perhaps AVG should address this concern instead of assuming we aren't following the steps and repeat the same information on multiple days.

No matter how many times you repeat the information, the issue is still going to remain. I am disappointed that I attempted to upgrade AVG to the newer install because the previous version is working fine on my other computers. I guess this computer is going to get Avast or Norton because my questions are not being answered.

Dusan's suggestion works
by akadean2 / February 11, 2010 3:33 PM PST

Believe me, I share your frustration. This AVG upgrade has been EXTREMELY difficult and time consuming. However, Dusan's suggestion does work to get past the "MSVC Redistributables installation failed" error. The trick is to follow the link to http://free.avg.com/ww-en/224793.num-2667#num-2667 that he posted on 1/11/10 and go to the third bullet from the bottom. I put the MS-DOS batch file from that *.zip file in a new folder with just the 9.0 installation file. Running the batch file installs 9.0 with a "NO_VC_REDIST" option. From everything I can see, it appears to have installed correctly and completely. Not sure why this one had to be so annoying, but that work-around will get the job done.

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
