AVG 8...unable to login to MSN Live Messenger

Apr 25, 2008 11:15PM PDT

Yesterday, I upgraded my subscription version of 7.5 AVG to the subscription version of AVG 8.
Now I am unable to login to MSN Live Messenger.
error message: 80072efd
When I click on "troubleshoot", I get the yellow exclamation point on "Ports".
I get a message saying: Unable to connect because of proxy or firewall settings.
I have checked the AVG Firewall configurations, and confirmed that the firewall is not blocking access to messenger.
Please advise.

AVG 8 - New Feature, Known Issue
Apr 26, 2008 5:04AM PDT

AVG 8 has a new feature called Web Shield that includes Instant Messaging protection. The feature prevents Windows Live Messenger from being able to log in. A workaround until they fix it is to disable the feature in AVG by unchecking it (you'll get a ****** little notice in your system tray telling you it's disabled, but at least Messenger will work).

I usually just disable it when I want to use Messenger then turn it back on when finished. AVG and Microsoft have been made aware of the issue so hopefully one of them will fix it soon.

AVG 8 ... info from AVG support, re: MSN Messenger:
Apr 27, 2008 12:23AM PDT

Below is the email response I received from AVG Technical Support addressing my issue with MSN Messenger login failure:

Please follow these steps in the given order to solve the issue:

1. Please answer the following questions:- What is your operating system? (Windows 2000, Windows XP, WindowsVista, ...)- What type of Internet connection are you using? (dial-up, cable,DSL, Wi-Fi, LAN ...)- Do you use proxy server?- Is there other security software installed on the computer?(firewall, anti-virus, ...)- Do you use any hardware router with firewall?- Which Internet browser are you using (including its version)?- Is the problem limited only to some websites? If yes then which, andhow are they affected (slow loading, blocked)?

2. Disable the "Firewall" component (if it is part of your AVG editionand is installed):- Please open AVG user interface (double-click the AVG icon on yourDesktop)- Double-click the "Firewall" component- Select the "Firewall disabled" option and confirm changes byclicking the "Save changes" button What is the situation now? - Enable the Firewall again.

3. Temporarily disable the AVG Web Shield component as follows:- Open AVG user interface- Double-click the "Web Shield" component- Uncheck the "Enable Web Shield" option- Confirm changes by pressing the "Save changes" button Is the problem solved now? - Enable the Web Shield again.

4. Now please disable AVG LinkScanner:- Open AVG user interface- Double-click the "LinkScanner" component- Uncheck all 3 available options- Confirm changes by pressing the "Save changes" button Please let us know if the issue persists. - Enable the LinkScanner again.

5. Please save the attached file "get_netcheck.zip" to your computer(e.g. to the Desktop), and extract its contents- Run the file "check_connection.bat".- Once it finishes, a utility AVG Diagnostics 8.0 will be started, with a list of attached diagnostic files.- Please fill in your e-mail address, write answers to the questionsfrom step 1 and describe which of the steps 2 - 4 solved the problem(if any).- Click "Diagnose and send results" to send us the results foranalysis.

Thank you for your cooperation.
It is appreciated.

That's AVG Asking You To Help Them Diagnose Their Software
Apr 27, 2008 3:08AM PDT

Each of those steps involves disabling something, seeing if it fixes the problem, enabling it again then sending AVG the results. Did any of the other options fix the problem other than disabling the Web Shield component?

Hopefully enough people will confirm to them it's their poorly tested IM component in web shield and they'll fix it, as should have been done before it was ever released.

able to logon to MSN Messenger now...
Apr 28, 2008 3:18AM PDT

I resolved the problem before receiving the AVG email response.
However, I'm not sure how I did it.
So I didn't post my resolution.
This is how I THINK I did it:
I opened the AVG program from the tray, clicked on FIREWALL, and changed the "select the Firewall profile" to "stand alone computer", saved the changes, and rebooted.
[The profile was ticked Allow All, previously]
When I rebooted I got a prompt from AVG asking if I wanted to access MSN.
I ticked yes.
Since then...no problems.

My tower computer is not networked to any other computers in the home.
However, I do have a laptop with a wireless connection to a router connected to my tower.
That is why I originally ticked Allow All.

I posted the AVG email response to example how they approached my complaint as a support team.

I haven't had any other problems with AVG 8.
However, I have noticed via the TuneUp Memory Optimizer indicator in my tray, that a great deal of memory is being used when no other programs other than AVG 8 is running.
And TuneUp Memory prompts me to excessive memory use by AVG 8 when I inquire within the TuneUp Memory program.

And one more thing...
Since downloading and running AVG 8, my computer takes a ridiculous amount of time to boot down.
Probably two full minutes.
Which, of course, seems like HOURS while sitting there waiting for it to shut down and being accustomed to it only taking a few seconds.
Don't know if that problem is related to AVG 8.

Have You Checked...
Apr 28, 2008 3:39AM PDT

If AVG 8 might be doing some type of scan when shutting down? If it is, there is probably some way to shut it off.

I have AVG 7.5 Pro, but I am not going to change till they stop updating the 7.5 version. So I don't know how the 8.0 version is set up, I am just guessing that it may be doing some type scan at shutdown.

AVG 8 blocking Messenger and live mail
Jun 7, 2008 6:57PM PDT

I renewed my paid version of AVG 7.5 and upgraded to the internet security version of AVG 8. I did not receive and discount for early renewal, as promised and I was surprised to receive no reply from 3 emails and 2 telephone calls to customer and technical support. There were 2 computer generated replies saying the delay was due to "operation reasons" My messenger and Live mail were blocked and i tried all ways to instruct the firewall to allow them. I evntually disabled the firewall and reverted to Windows Firewall. this cured the problem but did not address the fact that I was paying for a product which was only partially functional and appeared to have no customer support. After 9 days I downloaded the Windows Sevice pack 3 to replace my pack 2. Unaccountably this cured the problem.

On the following day I received a comlex email from AVG suggesting that I disable all the components, sequentially, and after each suggestion came the question "What is the situation now?" iwas to send this detailed reort back to AVG. I agree with thwe suggestion that they appeared to be getting the customer to help with the debugging.

I decided that "As it's not broke now, don't fix it" and I have accepted the considerable slowing of the computer as necessary evil to obtain good security. I had been entrely happy with the much cheaper 7.5 version. Jim Curley

AVG and MSN Messenger
May 1, 2008 1:14AM PDT

I don't have the AVG firewall installed, but I have version 8. The only help that I received from AVG was to partially disable the webshield. As this will allow msn signon. I would recommend using a jabber server or the psi client. The psi client runs using linux or unix.
