AVG 2011 Free and ProTools

Mar 10, 2011 12:16PM PST

over the past couple of days, AVG Free 2011 has decided that the ProTools.exe file is a virus and has removed it from my computer. Several others, as well. As it stands, ProTools.exe IS HOW I MAKE MY LIVING, and I am not amused. I finally managed to get the software to work again (by disabling Resident Shield and restoring the files), but now my USB ports don't work, so I can't enable any of my equipment.
Will the rocket scientist in charge of this SNAFU please come up with a logical solution?

I'm having the same problem, so I'll respond for slippersam11. I ran it through Jotti's malware scan and all of the scans reported "Found Nothing." Please resolve this issue as soon as possible; it's highly inconvenient.

Wish I could tell you what happened or provide info, but I don't think I can. I have gotten it working again, by disabling Resident Shield and restoring the protoolsle.exe file (and a couple of .dll files). If it helps, the same thing happened on my laptop when I tried to start ProTools to use as a backup. Got the red screen.
I'm guessing there was an automatic update to AVG Free on Wednesday night, and it included something that looks like the protoolsle.exe file. ProTools doesn't play well with several programs, so it is understandable (but no less frustrating). I had a big problem when Windows updated to IE8, too. Now have Chrome on that computer.
Got the computer to 'see' the M-Box again by unplugging it, shutting down the computer, starting and letting it totally reboot, then plugging in the M-Box again. At this point, I'll assume it works and not mess with it again until my work is finished.
BTW... this is ProTools 7.3 and Windows XP. ruggrawk, thanks. hope this helps.

i have since a couple of days same issue with same "no infection found" results in on line antiviruses . Avg showing me a lot of warnings of protools files: directIO.dll, protools.exe, and spreading to another files inside digidesing folders. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling protools and a lot of anti virus stuff but nothing with resident shield blocking digidesign asio driver access and pro tools program.... so turn off resident shield and sent directIO.dll to avg with my complains a few minutes ago... and now just waiting for a -i hope- decent reply.

I shut down the Resident Shield (open AVG, click Components, Resident Shield, and uncheck the RS box), restored the PT files from the virus vault, and it works. I am not using the internet on that computer right now, until we figure out what is going on. Afraid to run a full scan with AVG. I took PT off my laptop in order to keep using it for email and internet, files from PT that I need to send by email I grab over my network to send. There must be a string in those PT files that 'look like' a known virus, which is why AVG keeps removing them.
BTW, I could not uninstall PT from the laptop. Apparently, it was damaged in a way that prevents me from doing a proper uninstall, so I just deleted the folders. Sloppy, but it worked. Probably should uninstall AVG for now, too... not sure what else to use that wouldn't do the same thing...

Hello everyone,

in case some of the legitimate files are still detected (the most recent AVG virus database version is 1498/3506; installed virus database version can be found in lower-left corner of the AVG user interface) please provide us with them as described in this AVG Free Forum post for analysis. We will release a new virus database update removing incorrect detection reported as soon as possible, if necessary.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Hi
Avg sent me this email:

"Dear Sir/Madam,

thank you for your email.

Unfortunately, the current virus database version may detect the mentioned virus on some legitimate applications. We can confirm that it is a false alarm. We would like to inform you that the false positive will be removed in the next Definitions update. Please update your AVG and if a new Definitions update was downloaded, check whether the file is still detected.

If you need to restore deleted files from AVG Virus Vault you can do it this way:
- Open AVG user interface.
- Choose "Virus Vault" option from the "History" menu.
- Locate the file that was incorrectly removed and select it (one click).
- Click on the "Restore" button.

We are sorry for the inconvenience.

Best regards,

Petr Sevcik

I did have a second bout of AVG removing the .exe and .dll files, but restored them without any trouble (that was yesterday morning). Had to replace the icons on the desktop, but starting program from the start dropdown menu or windows explorer worked fine.
AVG Free updated yesterday, so I ran it last night and all is well. ProTools is working fine. Resident Shield is on.
Despite my temporary panic and frustration, that was fast action by AVG. Thanks!
