Hi,
Try this site for some discussion on Averatec models

I actually purchased a new Averatec 5500 and with rebates it came to around $530 with no tax and shipping. I'm very happy with the purchase. Originally I was thinking of a higher end Compaq 64 bit Athlon laptop (Compaq R3000Z), but I couldn't really justify it (plus I didn't like the relatively low end graphics card). So I bought the cheaper Averatec and a nice Dell desktop (for the games and heavy duty stuff)

Purchase of Averatec 5500

Hello, I wonder if you would mind letting me know where you were able to purchase and Averatec 5500 for $530. I was looking at one at Sam's Club for $700. If you wouldn't mind emailing me directly at boblangley@ispwest.com I'd appreciate it. Otherwise I will check back here sometime. thanks.

Amazon deal on techbargains
Feb 15, 2005 12:07PM PST

Hi,
The deal I got isn't available anymore. I can't remember the rebate deals, but I think it was $150 in rebates and at Xmas time there was also a $150 Amex Amazon certificate that I had also (available by playing some game online at the Amex website). Unfortunately that certificate is no longer available. I bought it at Amazon with no tax and shipping to california and paid for it with my Amex Starwood card, which also doubles the warranty to 2 years for free.

If you do a search on techbargains.com for the 5500 you'll see the rebates and also a link to Amazon. I think you should be able to get it for around $679 after rebate and no tax/shipping. I still think this is a good deal

My only real beef about the laptop is the poor wireless range. I have to use an external USB wireless adaptor. The keypad I can live with. The screen is nice and bright. Wish it had better than XGA+ though, but I shouldn't complain. I essentially use this to cruise, use microsoft apps and do light photoshop. I'm happy. I'm not a huge gamer, and if I do game then it'll be on a $500 desktop. I didn't really want to pay a 'premium' for a better laptop, since my use is pretty restricted, and I felt that there really isn't much point paying a premium when the laptop I really want with a decent graphics card and Athlon 64 is not at a pricepoint that I'm willing to pay

RE: Quality
Feb 15, 2005 11:00AM PST

I purchased an Averatec laptop when they first showed up at Office Depot in late April of 2003 (model 3150 or something). I was smitten with it's tiny, lightweight design. Well, the first one I bought had a wireless card that didn't work. I exchanged it at Office Depot the next day; the second notebook worked for three months before the hard drive went bad. Averatec repaired it for me in about two weeks - great customer service. After it came back, I sold it. Also, another thing I noticed about the second notebook was that it had several dead pixels in the screen.

That said, I am sure Averatec notebook quality has improved. Nevertheless, I won't buy another one - it's a budget notebook, and you get what you pay for.

AVOID AVERATEC
Feb 27, 2005 12:09PM PST

every model i looked into had dead pixel issues out of the box i only read one review that it worked ok the plastic case is very fragile...dont get me wrong laptops are fragile period due to their design the extra 449 you invest for a toshiba m45-s331 is well worth it a year from now when averatec wants that to fix your laptop, may i also sugest a compaq 2200 series they are basic but much better as opposed to averatec i currently have both those laptops and a gateway 2500 (old school) they are all great no problems and these babies go through abuse like sitting in a cab of a tractor rig used as my drivers log book and hard drives sustain NO damage thusfar....do as you wish please heed the warnings as i hate to see people gripe about the POS laptop they bought to save bucks in the long run extra 500 or even 300 is worth your trouble aint it?

Averatec
Feb 27, 2005 4:11PM PST

I know more people that are very happy with thier Averatec than people that arent. All but one of them have LT's with a build date after 11-04. Before then there seems to be alot of problems. I haven't had a lick of problems with mine. Build date 12-04 3250HX. $598.22. I haven't been kind to it either. 100% no problems whatsoever.

Averatec Laptops
Apr 3, 2005 8:33AM PDT

I have owned an Averatec 3150 for more than 2 years now and love the machine. We use it as our only home laptop and access the internet through a wireless network card. The keyboard is smaller than the typical laptop which enables Averatec to keep the machine size much smaller than typical Dells, etc. The cheaper models come with Celeron or AMD processors which really don't work as fast as Intel Pentiums, but are certainly more than reasonable for the typical home user. No complaints here.

Don't Buy It
Apr 3, 2005 8:39AM PDT

I just bought an Averatec 5400 from Wal-mart, and returned it for days later. As far as I'm concerned, not a reliable brand. It froze often, even with 512 MB of RAM, and would freeze on shutdown. When the lid was closed for more than 5 or so minutes, the notebook would not wake back up when the lid was reopened. It also shut off for no reason on a few occasions.

avertec 5400 notebook
Dec 22, 2005 4:25AM PST

I had the same problem with this notebook. I solved the problem by doing a clean install of xp pro, not the avertec restore disks, but a boxed retail version then installed the needed drivers. It seems to have been a bug in there build of xp. I talked to them and they refused to admit that there bulid was the problem.

Averatec Rebates
May 26, 2005 6:59AM PDT

Don't judge the laptop based on rebates. I'm still waiting for my rebate. Also the price of the laptop was dropped $100 just over 30 days after I bought one.
You get a generic postcard saying you don't qualify.

You either did not send in the salesslip, was not timely, or bar label not submitted.
