Avatar + HT-C5500 = Fail

Apr 28, 2010 4:41AM PDT

Yes, I bought Avatar on the first day. No it does not play on my HT-C5500. Yes I have the "Red Screen of Death."

I went to the support page and downloaded the firmware update. Transferred the file to a USB drive, popped it into the player and turned it on. The player recognized the update, re-started, annd nothing happened. It basically froze, though the word "UPDATE" flashed on the LCD screen on the unit. No progress bar appeared on the TV screen. I'm not even sure if that update would address my issue.

I popped Avatar into my PS3 and watched it. I decided not to go the etra step and use the Digital sound output to allow the home theater to work.

What did I do wrong in the update process? Would the firmware on the site resolve my issue? Did I make a mistale buying this new home theater system?

Avatar + HT-C5500 = Fail

Edwin320,

What happens if you push the FF>> on the remote at the "red screen"? Some have reported that FF>> gets past the problem, and another user mentioned he hit the STOP button, and then the Menu button, and it goes to the Menu.

I got the movie to play, but...
Apr 28, 2010 11:36PM PDT

Using the "Stop" + "Menu" method, I was able to get the movie to start playing. The playback was heavily pixelated (I have DirecTV, and it gets pixelated when heavy clouds block the signal. It looked like that). It was basically unwatchable.

Movie plays with Jittery Image
May 8, 2010 11:21PM PDT

I used the online as well as USB modes to update the BIOS to 1010.4.
Despite showing up in the "settings", I was still getting the Red background message.

Called support, they stated that the Red background implied the update hadn't worked. For the update to apply a 15 sec hold on the stop button was required. That procedure caused a reboot. After that the "stop" followed by "menu" (on remote) allowed the movie to play.

The issue now is the pixelated image quality which renders the DVD unwatchable. My Receiver is set to allow "pass-through" of the signal quality. Next step is to call support again, but wondering if anyone has found a fix to this.

Edwin320,

I can't determine if the new firmware was applied or not. Are you able to tell which version you have?

Do other titles play, or are they all the same as the Avatar disc?

The firmware did not apply. The original version remains (though I forgot the exact version number - I can check it this evening).

Every other title I've tried so far plays fine on it. I watched Sherlock Holmes a couple of days ago and had no problems. My Wife tried to make me watch Twilight on it. From what she tells me, that movie also played with no problems.

Also, as mentioned earlier, Avatar played fine on the PS3 so it's not the Avatar disc.

Edwin320,

Can you try a different method, such as a network update? I'm not sure why the update isn't taking. And the disc tray is empty when you attempt this, and you keep it empty after the restart, correct? Keep me posted.

Re: Avatar + HT-C5500 = Fail : Same problem after latest
Jun 12, 2010 7:46PM PDT

Avatar only disc tried so far. Red screen of death result.
Brand new (week old player from John Lewis). Software version was 1005.5
Connected network no problem for update, but update failed due to version conflict!
Called support, got thru after 30 mins. Support totally unaware of any issue with C5500. They suggested USB update.
Installed the USB update which successfully upgraded to 1012.6 on reboot

The result was not the red screen of death but a black or blue screen of death (saying effectively the same)

I called support and they suggested that it was the disc that was at issue. I advised them that the disc played fine in my laptop.....

I am wondering about returning this for another make.

lincolnat,

The black screen is due to the copy protections on the disc. To get past them, press the FF>> button on the remote. You can also try to press the Disc Title button and treat it like a warning page.

Once the warning has a black background, you should be good to go by passing it with the remote buttons.

Hi

Thanks for the reply. Although I have taken the disc back so I can't test, I'm pretty sure the 'black screen' was a compatibility warning/message and not just an intro or loading screen.

The plan is to try a few other blu-ray discs and see how it goes.

Cheers,
Antony

lincolnat,

Keep me posted. The Red screen does note incompatibility, the black screen is a warning/reminder screen. That particular title is not user friendly in this regard, but it should work.

Got the Avatar Movie to play on the Samsung C5500!
Jan 5, 2011 8:33AM PST

This is the live chat with Samsung that got my C5500 Samsung running my Avatar movie!

Roxanne: I recently purchased the blu ray player 5500 and I received the Avatar blu ray movie. I keep getting the red screen of death. I downloaded the firmware to a disc and a thumb drive, with an end result stating the blu ray is up to date. I still get the red screen. Are there any remedies for this situation? My research online has not sounded to hopeful.

Darlene: Confirm me if you are using BD-C5500?
Roxanne Richardson: yes

Darlene: Let me know the S/W version. It will be of format 1XX.XX.
Roxanne: What do you mean?
Roxanne: How do I find that?

Darlene: With the disc tray open, press and hold the INFO button on the remote control. The System Information appears on the screen.

Roxanne: BSP-C5500WWB-1002.5

Darlene: There is an new firmware that can be installed in the Player.
Darlene: Let me know if the player is connected to the Internet.
Roxanne: No it is not.
Roxanne: I dont have a cord long enough.

Darlene: I will provide you two website. One will assist you to download the firmware into your computer. The second one will provide you the instructions to Install the firmware into your player. Would you like me to proceed with this?
Roxanne: Yes
Roxanne: I thought I did this already?
Roxanne: I have my husband starting the other computer, so we can follow your directions while I am on this computer.

Darlene: No. The new firmware available for the player is of version ver.1020.1
Roxanne: Weird, I went to Samsung site for firmware update.
Roxanne: OK lead the way!
Darlene: You need an USB flash drive to update the firmware of the player.
Roxanne: Ok we have one.
Darlene: Here is the first website:
Darlene: http://downloadcenter.samsung.com/content/FM/201012/20101227153552293/BSP-C5500WWB-1020.1.zip

Darlene: Click on the website and select Save.
Darlene: Here is the second website, that will provide you with the instructions to download and install the firmware in your player:
Roxanne: I am on a mac does that make a difference?
Darlene: You need to have an application to uncompress the Zip file.

Darlene: http://ars.samsung.com/customer/usa/jsp/faqs/faqs_view_us.jsp?SITE_ID=1&PG_ID=3&PROD_SUB_ID=788&PROD_ID=839&AT_ID=134065

Darlene: It will take 20-30 minutes, to complete the process of Downloading and Installing the Firmware into your Player.

AVATAR...
Jan 5, 2011 12:19PM PST

Make sure this is not the avatar collectors edition...
with your firmware updated, its normal that you still see the red or black warning page when you load the disc. this is embedded on the disc itself...

to make sure you updated the firmware, open disc tray, press and hold info button for 5 sec.. look for SW on the screen.. compare it with the version that you downloaded, if they are same, then you are updated...

Now to play the disc, insert it, when it tries to load the disc, press STOP on the remote and wait until you see STOP in front of your bluray.. Then, press DISC MENU on the remote and it will bring you directly to the main menu.. choose PLAy on the screen and press ENTER/SELECT on your remote.
That should play the movie...
