With no details of your system or what happens when you try to scan (error messages) it is very difficult, but here goes.

1] Uninstall then re-install Avast.

2] Scan in Safe Mode.

You didn't mention whether you use the free or paid version but even the free version will require registration after a period or it will generate the error you mentioned. As well, re-registration is required yearly. Check to see if this is the case. It's under Maintenance/registration.
