Does avast have a bunch of teenagers designing the gui?
The thing looks like a Christmas tree.

To see the GUI I watched https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TXETLO9BWAM

The interface looks consistent with the new Windows 8 and 10 tablet mode or "modern" UI. The actual name of this style is up for debate which I won't get into.

This style is fairly recent and may irk Windows users from XP to W7.

Look at the preview of the YouTube and you see... An interface that would work well on those Windows Tablets. HUGE buttons and icons ready for the finger. ("Phrasing! - Archer.)
