by 1Chris / February 22, 2014 1:43 PM PST

I finally got Windows 8.1 on my laptop. Wow, that was a lotta work! So I download Avast, and it says it can't run on this pc. I'm all, huh? What's app with that? Any clues?

And Avast was fine.

-> Remember there's a lot of malware out there.
-> If there's an antivirus installed, it may tell you it can't install (run?)

I went to the Avast site with directed me to download.cnet.com - I hope that site is safe :-(). Did it twice. Have a screenshot - big banner that says "This app can't run on your pc" when I double click the Avast_setup.exe file. Doesn't look like you can upload attachments here.

Yes if you have another AV product installed the installer may complain/fail.

Uninstall the old AV.....reboot....run the Avast setup file.

Just from what I'm reading.....cnet download is a little shaky.....no first hand experience.

Avast into Win 8.1 two weeks ago with no problems on a computer I built. I went directly to Avast's download site for free download and was re directed to Download.com . While downloading, Download.com snuck in Google Chrome even though I un-checked install. Avast installed without a problem but I had to uninstall Google Chrome.
