if you have Norton it will handle both email applications.
I am not sure why AVG free will not but I know that AVG 7.0 which I use has the option of 'Microsoft Outlook' or 'Personal Email Application' which is generic enough to handle 2 different applications and scan the email.
What happens is that AVG email scanner uses ports 5100 and 5101 from the POP and SMTP servers, regardlesss of the type of email client.
AVG 7.0, although a paid subscription is free for 30 days.
Why not give it a try and make a determination at the expiration of that period of time

I was thrilled to discover AVG, until I found the free edition does not handle Thunderbird's outgoing mail. Then I discovered Avast, which does. Then I remembered my wife uses Outlook Express. She has no interest in switching. I'm using Thunderbird, she's using Outlook Express.
I already have Norton. Is Norton the best way to handle these two email clients? I don't think there's a free AV that will handle two different email apps, so I'm willing to pay up. If I have to switch from Norton, so be it.
I'm a bit flummoxed at the moment.
Suggestions, anyone?
