AV Decision=Renew Norton or Go With Free AVG

Mar 7, 2004 10:02PM PST

My norton coverage ends in 4 weeks.Anyone know what the cost is to just renew currant subscription?
Would I lose anything if I let it expire and go with free AVG? I currently have Norton Version 8.02.Using windows 98(build 4.10.1998.

Boy, did you open a can of worms. . .

I've never been a proponent of free AV software, I feel that you get what you pay for. Others swear by it. If you're happy with NAV (I've been using it for years), get the upgrade. I think it's about ten bucks. NAV will auto-update, AVG won't (with the free version). No support on the AVG free.

Renew that version is cheap.

If it works, stay the course. It's not expensive either.

What I will not endorse in any way is NAV 2004. Something derailed on that version.

Free AVG auto-updates fine here, so I'm unsure what the issue there was.

And the reason I changed to AVG was simple. Symantec blinked. Their updater failed more than one and the hoop jumping to get it working again became too much trouble.

Well I just renewed Norton for a year.Cost $19.95
It has worked well for me so far.I guess Im just old fashioned and hate change.I was hoping to be talked out of it but we old timers tend to stick to tried and true."At least until it screws up".Thank you both for your opinions.Happy > ))))*>

I've used Norton, McAffee, and AVG on over 100 computers over a 7 year time period. Besides the good people at Grisoft offering their AVG software free. I think it is one of the best if not the best antivirus software on the market today.

That opinion is based on my experience and my observations of other users of Norton with over 100 PC's, Macs, etc. on their network.

Typically when the "big" viruses hit, it's not AVG PC's. I've seen it time after time.
