autorun disabled

Feb 13, 2004 10:22PM PST

I've had two new notebook computers recently, one I returned, and I've had the exact same problem with both. When I uninstall the Norton antivirus trial version it disables the CD-ROM autorun feature. I uninstalled the program through the control panel, did a search and deleted all files and folders left behind. After that, the autorun failed. I rebooted the computer and it still wouldn't work. I did a system restore, uninstalled the program through the control panel and didn't delete the folders left and the autorun feature isn't affected. The problem, if I don't delete all references to the trial version, including the registry entry, the retail version I own, Norton Antivirus 2004, won't install properly. I know some people don't like the autorun feature and disable it but, I happen to be one who likes it and wants it to work properly.

I've been to Norton's web site, done a search for information about autorun and nothing I've found addresses this problem. The instructions to enable autorun found at Microsoft.com and other XP trouble shooting web sites doesn't work. So far, the only thing I've found that works is to do a system restore to a point before uninstalling Norton when the autorun was working. I'm stumped and wonder if anyone has any suggestions besides not using the retail version of Norton 2004. Thanks.

Unfortunately, I've been to that site, did what was recommended and it doesn't work. I've also checked the registry and all of the autorun values are fine and exactly as listed.

This has happened with two different computers. They were different brands, both using Windows XP home addition with the Norton trial version factory installed. I've checked and the disabling of the autorun feature happens as soon as Norton is uninstalled. Any other suggestions?

1. The article [Q314855] warns that by default, only users who are logged on to Windows XP with Power User or Administrator rights are allowed to install software. In Windows XP, files that have an .inf extension are considered to be setup information files. As a result, the Autorun.inf file does not run if you do not have Power User or Administrator rights. Therefore, when a CD-ROM is detected, Windows XP is notified that a new volume is available and the drive is checked for an Autorun.inf file. A user who is neither a Power User nor an Administrator is prompted with an "Install Program as other user" message when the CD-ROM autorun is processed.

2. Please read through "System Cannot Access CD-Rom, CD-Recorder or DVD Devices."

I'm logged on as the administrator. Thanks for trying to help but, I've seen all of this information before and it doesn't work.

Just a thought, you might try unstalling the cd/rom in the device manager and reboot.

You have found a flaw in Symantec's offering (plus the ongoing saga of supporting an OS!)

If Symanatec can't help you, then you'll have to decide if they are worthy of your patronage.

I uninstalled the CD-ROM drive, rebooted the computer and Windows reinstall it. After that, the problem was solved. Thanks everyone.
