Question

Autoplay does not work on DVD drive but OK with USB flash dr

May 31, 2016 10:12AM PDT

Hello,

I have built a new computer using a Hero VIII motherboard and installed Windows 7 Pro 64bit onto a SM951 M2 drive.
Computer spec:-
Asus Hero VIII Motherboard,
Intel 6700K
16 Gbyte Ram
Samsung SM951 M2 drive for OS
2 off Asus DRW-24F1MT drives
2 off Seagate 2TByte HD's
Sandisk 256GByte SSD
Asus GTX960 Graphics Card

Windows was installed from one of the DVD's them using a modified installation disc created with the Asus EZInstaller and appeared to install OK. Windows installed in UEFI mode (disc partition GPT).

Now I am starting to install software but have hit a problem when installing fron a CD or DVD - installing from a USB drive works OK.

When I insert a DVD or a CD to install any programs the drive LED light flashes for a moment, but Autoplay does not run.

NOTE: Autoplay does run OK when a USB drive is inserted or even when a USB 2TByte external disc drive is inserted - it just does not work when a CD or DVD is inserted in the drive.

Now here's the strange thing....

Selecting "Computer" from start menu or opening Disc Management while a DVD is inserted will get the drive running and autoplay will open.
The same applies to music CD's - they will not start Media player until either "Computer" or Disc Management is opened.

Also, perhaps even stranger, inserting a USB drive while a DVD or CD is in the drive will get the DVD drive running and autuplay will open - actually 2 instances of it open - one for the USB drive and one for the DVD drive.

It seems the DVD drive needs a kick to get it going.

I have checked in registry for the following entry - HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer for the entry NoDriveTypeAutoRun

However, the folder "Explorer" does not exist in this new computer, though it does in my other computer which works and the entry is set to DWORD NoDriveTypeAutoRun Reg_DWORD 0x00000091 (145)

I assume that as this is only required to stop autoplay then it is not necessary to have it set - is that true ?

Another possibility is that as the drives are SATA devices could the settings in BIOS could be the cause of the problem ?

The only setting I have adjusted in BIOS is Secure Boot which I set to "Other OS" in order to install Window 7 - it is still set to this.

Could CSM setting have an effect on this which is still set to default of "enabled".

Any help in resolving this would be appreciated.

Regards,

Nick.

Answer
Autoplay has been disabled in many patches.

As Autoplay was found to be a too easy path to launch attacks, it's usually non-functional after you get Windows 7 and on patched up.

Sadly, I would never count on autoplay to work ever again. Plenty written about this so I'll pause here.

After you insert the disc and it does not auto play open and close the tray.

Thanks for the replies,

Firstly, removing the DVD or CD from the drive and re-inserting will not cure the proble - the drive LED lights flash a few times but Autoplay does not start.

I have now discovered that if a DVBD or CD is inserted shortly after Windows has been started that Autoplay will work and is displayed OK - the main settings are "Ask me every time" which is what I want for DVD's or CD's and the pop up Autoplay window appears.

However, if I wait to long Autoplay does not work as mentioned above.

I therefore assume that some program or process that is started when the computer is switched on is causing the problem - if the disc is inserted before this program and/or process completes it works OK, but fails when it is running.

Is it possible for a program or process to only affect autoplay on the DVD drives and not on USB drives ?

If so, how can I identify which program or process is causing this ?

At this stage only a few programs have been installed - these are :-

The Asus NVidia graphics drivers (from DVD0
The Asus Motherboard support utilities (from DVD)
Corsair Link for PSU and Cooler.
EditPad Lite
Office 2003

As I write this I realise that autoplay worked fine when the graphics drivers and motherboard utilities were installed, so presumably it was the motherboard utilities that caused the problem as this was from a DVD and autoplay worked OK.

Is there anyway of finding out what caused the problem with autoplay, assuming it may be the motherboard disk that caused it ?

Nick.

Remember Autoplay should be disabled.

Start the machine in safe mode.

Answer
Culprit identified, but another question...
Jun 2, 2016 3:17PM PDT

Hello,

Safe mode had no effect - autoplay would still not work.
I was ging to start with a fresh install of Windows but I noticed I had a restore point before I installed the Asus motherboard support disk.

With nothing to loose I used this restore point and restarted the computer.

Autoplay then worked OK, even though things like internet connectivity would not as the drivers had been removed.

I then re-installed the motherboard support DVD and after it had completed autoplay still worked but the computer required re-starting.

As you may guess after this autoplay would not work again.

I then noticed that a few install points had been created by the install, the last one being a Windows Critical Update. This was shown as removing the following programs and drivers:-

Intel(R) Management Engine Components 11.0.0.1163 (Program)
Intel (System) 07/28/2015 11.0.0.1160 (Driver)
Intel Corporation (HDC) 07/27/2015 14.6.0.1029 (Driver)
Kernal-Mode Driver Framework v-1.11 (KB2685811) (Windows Update)

I restored the computer to that restore point, re-started and tested again.

Autoplay now works OK, so it looks like one of the items above was the problem.

What I am wondering now - are any of the removed programs/drivers important and likely to cause problems in the future ?

Regards,

Nick.

One of the recurring pieces of advice

Is to not use Microsoft for driver updates. And if your drivers and machine are working, do not install new drivers.
