Autocomplete re. logon/password not working

I'm running Win 98SE with IE6 and have recently experienced a problem with logon and password entry not being remembered on websites that I visit regularly (eBay for example). I've checked all the correct items in Options-Content and ensured 'inline autocomplete' is checked under 'Advanced'. I think it started after a Windows security update, but I might be wrong about that. As far as I'm aware I haven't installed any software that messes with tracking on IE. I've always been able to sort tech. problems with my PC until now, but this has me beat and as much as I hate to admit defeat, is there anyone out there who could help...please. Thanks, Robin.

Logins are determined by cookies. . .

How are your cookie settings. If they are denied, auto-logins won't work.

Cookies are fine!

Hi and thanks for your suggestion. I've checked my cookie settings and the Privacy is set to medium. I specify which sites that I allow cookies from, most are blocked unless I have to allow to access them. I changed Privacy to low to allow all cookies but the problem remains unfortunately! There's something else that I've noticed that may be incidental, but when moving from the logon to the password box by pressing 'tab' or clicking, there is a noticable pause (at least 3 seconds) and I'm sure this is a sympton related to the overall problem. When I disable autocomplete there is no pause. Does this help? Thanks again. Robin.

You might start over by clearing the auto-complete forms cache.

Cleared Cache

OK. I've cleared the cache as suggested, but to no avail! I've continued to investigate this problem and have a hunch that it could be a permissions/access issue. I use Sage Accounts V9 and recently upgraded to V10. After upgrading I was unable to login to Sage and kept receiving a 'invalid password' message even though there is no password! Also, there was a good 5 sec delay from moving from the logon to the password box as with IE problem. I have experienced this problem whilst installing Sage on XP, but not on Win 98. Do you think one of the Windows updates has enforced permissons in Win 98. It's not an area that I'm familiar with unfortunately.

Borrism, Back To Cookies Again...

The "stored" cookies in the "Temporary Internet Files" and "Cookies" folder are where passwords are "remembered". If you have any program which automactically cleans out the Temporary Internet Files folder then those cookies will be deleted and therefore the password will be forgotten.

I'm not aware of any third party programs which you may have installed which could be doing this..If you have any , check those settings. While in Internet Explorer check the settings by clicking on "Tools" in the upper left, choose "Internet Options", click on the "Advanced" tab, then scroll to the "Security" section at the bottom and UNCHECK the box that says: "Empty Temporary Internet Folder when browser is closd".

Hope this helps.

Cookies still fine!

I've checked the advanced setting for clearing cookies as you suggested, but it was already unticked. I've been on/off the internet several times and closed down IE to see if cookies are still there and they appear to be intact. The main issue I feel is that even if options to remember passwords are checked and I receive the prompt to remember passwords, it doesn't remember (maybe it's adopting my poor memory abilities!). I logged off, but didn't close IE, then logged back in so that if a program was clearing history/cookies then it wouldn't get a chance. Still didn't work! Thanks for your help though Grif. Robin.

Robin, Some Reading For You..

Here's a link which describes the difference between the "remembered" cookies and the autocomplete feature. In addition, it suggests a number of things that should help you trouble shoot the issue.:

Internet Explorer - AutoComplete Passwords

Hope this helps.
