I found the best way is to buy or borrow a OBD reader. I plug it in and it will provide codes. I then type these codes with my car's year make and model into Google. This will list forums of others that have similar problems. I read thru these and try some of their ideas starting with the easiest and cheapest first. I can work thru 90% of my problems this way without going to a mechanic and save a lot of money.
