Audio / Video connections

Jan 11, 2005 2:49AM PST

Hey all,

got a onkyo HTIB that is connected to a TV that has svideo and rca jacks for audio and video. ALso running a satelite box and basic dvd player. Does it make sense to bother with digital coaxial cables (or svideo) if the lowest component doesn't have digital inputs/outputs (TV)?

Thanks

Your ? is a little confusing but I think you are asking if you should use the digital audio connections from your DVD player and Sat box into your Onkyo HTIB even though your TV has no such thing? If you want surround sound you will have to use some sort of digital audio connection from those pieces of equipment to your HTIB. If you don't, you will only have a stereo affect.

Optical and coaxial digital cables are for audio only, so yes - it makes sense to use them to connect your DVDp to receiver. As mentioned previously, it's the only way to get these 5+ audio channels.

If your TV only has composite video inputs, then your best bet is to run a composite cable directly from your DVDp to one of your TV inputs. This avoids redundant connections from DVDp to receiver to TV and saves the price of a cable. I'd only route video through the receiver if my TV didn't have enough video inputs to connect all of my sources directly.
