Audio problems -- no sound coming out of headphones.

Sep 8, 2010 12:51AM PDT

Hey guys.

To start off, here are my specs:

-Dell Inspiron 1545
-Windows 7 Home 64-bit
-High Definition Audio Device driver

So a couple of days ago (Monday night) I came home and tried to listen to some music on my computer but there was no sound coming out of my headphones. My speakers are fine and the music does play through them--the speakers stop playing when headphones are plugged in and the computer DOES recognize the headphones.

I have since tried multiple things to try to fix this problem and here is a list of everything I've tried (in order) as well as the results:

1. Downloading a new driver (I have an IDT driver) but that didn't work because the installer insisted I have a SigmaTel driver installed that I have to uninstall first.

-tried to uninstall SignmaTel driver but could not find one listed in Device Manager (only listed IDT) OR in Add/Remove Programs

2. System Restore but I only had restore points from after the problem happened

3. Dell Diagnostics-- headphones did work with the diagnostics

4. Uninstalling IDT driver-- now I have a High Definition Audio Driver which is only for the speakers and the computer no longer recognizes the headphones being plugged in.

I think that's all the info. I've got--anyone willing to take up the challenge?

Note: I've also posted this problem on the Dell Forums but haven't had much luck.

I know it's the first thing one might try but you didn't mention giving it a shot.. The jack may be faulty..

Hope this helps.

I have tried different sets of headphones and I ran a diagnostic and heard sound through the headphones so I know it is not the jack.
