So hit your dell documentation to find out then consider adding a new sound card. If your needs are modest then a sub-10 buck solution I use is this -> http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=CL-USCM2&cat=SND
On Vista I didn't have to install a driver. Go figure.

Hey everyone i am new to the site and to computers in general. I have a dell dimension 5150 desktop that i am currently using and have encountered a problem. for the last week the sound has gone out and whenever i try to access volume control i get the "there are no active mixer devices message". I have tried almost everything i can find like updating all my drivers from Dell Support and installing and reinstalling the Sigmatel High Def Audio Codec. I have gone into the device manager and started Windows Audio. I have run every Diagnostic Driver program imaginable and nothing has worked. I am guessing i just need a new sound card but for some reason when i pop open the tower i cannot find it. There is nothing behind where the speaker is plugged in so im guessing its built into the motherboard but i couldnt locate it. Any help would be appreciate from anyone who has run into this problem because i know its common. Thanks
