General discussion

audio dvd

Jun 30, 2010 3:10AM PDT

I have win xp sp3, optiarc cd/dvd writer, roxio 2010, image burn, dvdfab

I tried burning mp3 songs to dvdusingroxio it acted ok then I put dvd in a sony 400 disk player it said cannot play

why does roxio have create audio dvd but player can't play?

I've read numerous threads but I'm getting more confused as to if you can download mp3's from amazon(after paying) and burn them to dvd. I hear cd-r's are going the way of vhs

- There's a standard for video DVD's (like the normal retail DVD's).
- There's a standard for audio CD's (like the normal retail CD's).
- There's a standard for data CD's, which means that every PC and Mac will be seeing the folders and files. But, of course, that doesn't necessarily mean they will be able to do something useful with that files.
- There's even a standard for data DVD's. That's the same as for CD's. Means that if you burn a data DVD on one PC, you'll be able to read the data on another PC. Great medium for backup and transfer of large files.

- But there's no standard for an audio DVD.
- And there's no law that dictates that any DVD-player (or CD-player for that matter) should be able to play mp3's or ogg's or wma's or DRM'd music from the Apple iPod store or amazon.com.

So begin with reading the user manual of your DVD-player to see what it can do (and what it can't do). Then you might be able to make something that works somewhat (or even more than that).

It works just like any other DVDRW drive. I think Kees nailed above. Here's the one statement that cleared it up.

"But there's no standard for an audio DVD.
- And there's no law that dictates that any DVD-player (or CD-player for that matter) should be able to play mp3's or ogg's or wma's or DRM'd music from the Apple iPod store or amazon.com."

PS. Just sharing.

Since we know there is no standard here and the software makers of cd/dvd recording are not going to help you with your specific DVD player I'm going to offer you what I do in such cases. It's rather simple and it works.

I go with what works.

Many DVD players can handle MP3 playback so I learned to pop MP3s onto the DVD into folders and try that out. But that may upset some users since they want DOCUMENTATION detailing every click, screen and pop. As someone said "Never going to happen" for reasons revealed above.

But this shouldn't stop you from experimenting to see what does and does not work.

ONE BIG ITEM TO KEEP IN MIND is the number 99. While a fine agent of CONTROL, the number 99 is sadly a common limit to the number of titles you can cram onto a volume simply because that's the number of digits on the display panel!

thanks Bob things are getting clearer now thanks to all my purpose for using dvd audio was get 2 disk set on 1 looks like an mp3 burn would be easiest but will experiment

By the way if it's true cd is on way out what will replace it

Even I don't have a lot of CDs left.

But I'm not a big music hound. My car has some 20 CDs and I pop those in when I feel like it. Most of this is all about "the industry" and how to monetize everything with monthly subscriptions (XM radio?) to more.

But YOUR TOPIC is all about DVD audio and the "no standards here" problem. I think you responded kindly to all which helps immensely in that folks will share how they dealt with this. One member was rather course about DVD changers which are now rare. The reasons are simple. Ready? "Declining market." The Cable/Fios DVR is partly why. There are other reasons too.

Hope this helps.

in a recent post you said you " pop MP3s onto the DVD into folders " I know your dislike of giving steps but I have to ask anyway.

Are you familure with amazon? are their downloads propritary mp3 or not I'm still playing with getting more songs on a disk I an easily burn amazon downloads that play but disk gets loaded. I'm cloxse I think to understanding it may come down to file format

The steps vary wildly with the burning app.
Jul 5, 2010 2:02AM PDT

But most of them allow you to create a folder to get around the common 99 item limit. Well, 99 folders with 99 items in each?

As to Amazon, if it's a MP3 then it's 99% assured to be without DRM and will play on anything.

thanks that helps the players are both Sony dvd is dvcdx995 cdpcx 355 is cd player

I thibk I'll try and ask roxio what they mean by create audio dvd's but there is a language barrier. I gather there is only a dvd data standard at this time and my dvd player won't play dvd audio very few do from what I read

thanks

To me, audio dvd means...

audio format on a dvd disc (not mp3 or other data formats).

And players of such are now RARE.

My apology.
Jul 1, 2010 3:15AM PDT

Sorry I didn't mean that to be rude in any way. But I see you are now in the know and appear to be ready to tackle this in new ways.

I hope you see from all the above the (lack of) standards and why some companies will give you a confused response to your questions. In fact even if they supplied you with exacting details and software to create SACD or other such media, your player would just spit it back at you.

That's why I suggested going with what works as well and knowing about the number 99.

No need I am learning a lot sommething I appreciate I've picked up much useful info Roxio makes burning look so simple until you learn it's too simple and much is left out. I am not learned in the subject and will admit with no trouble I come here and always go away smarter.

I burned a mp3 in roxio everything went fine until I hit play in cd player it runs just no sound I used cd-r seems I've more to learn

My suggestion;
Jul 2, 2010 1:40AM PDT

Try it on another mp3 player that's not a changer and if it play ok, then it's not the cd or dvd burning; which would leave only the changer being the issue. That's how I look at it.

I just take a look at the DVPcx995 and...
Jul 1, 2010 8:58AM PDT

that thing look like a Swiss knife. That thing can everything under the sun (maybe almost). I suggest going at this one step at a time. Maybe start with mp3 first with both cd and then dvd.
