Tell more info. Operating software? Describe what happens when you insert cd. Any sound? Can you hear it run, Led light lit or off. Give some clues.

? Win Amp ?
? Real Player ?
? Windows Media Player ?
? Xing Player ?
? Others ?
? What happened previously ? You inserted the CD and it plays automatically ?
? Do you have a headphone output and volume control at the CD ROM ? If so, do you hear anything ?
? At Device Manager, anything 'strange' for your sound card ?

Have you tried opening the CD and double clicking an audio file ? Or launching the player and go to File>Open ? i.e. Manually runing rather than letting the CD run automatically. Try also a CD lens cleaner.

The quickest way to troubleshoot a dying drive is to substitute a known good unit. Lowered life expectancy is directly proportional to price in optical drives.

You can try resetting the AutoPlay function:

* Open My Computer.
* Right-click the CD-ROM Drive | Properties.
* Click the AutoPlay tab.
* Change the top selectio to Music CD
* In Actions select Play using Windows Media Player
* Click Apply

Hope that works for you.

disconnect the cd-rom drive from the motherboard, then start the computer, boot up, shut down, plug the drive back in
