Audacity music editing software -Basic query ?

Im new to audacity which I downloaded a few weeks ago. Im not very technical but have used it to import sound files(both pre-recorded and my own recordings and have also edited files, selected sections saved to discs etc...and have several files I can access through 'recent files'. So far very usefull. Now suddenly I cant 'play' any of the files. There is just a squeak and on the Meter Toolbar- the output meter (the green indicator) just shoots along. Have I accidentally clicked some function disabling 'play' or....Any help much appreciated.
