ATTENTION! The newly redesigned forums are launching 11/08

Nov 7, 2006 12:37PM PST

Hi everyone,

I'm happy and truly excited to announce that the newly redesigned CNET forums are finally ready to rock n' roll!!! WOOT!!

If all goes according to plan, we will be implementing the new forums on November 8th between the hours of 9AM - 5PM PST. During this time the current forums will be placed into read mode only, which means you will be unable to post. However, you will be able to read all the posts in the forums to your heart's content .

I really want to tell you about all the changes, but nah, it's a surprise Grin. Our engineers, design and production teams have put a lot of heart and effort behind this project in hopes to bring you a better forum experience, so when it's show time, I hope you all enjoy it and give them a sincere thanks!

When the changes have taken place, please let me know in this thread, what you think of it, OK?

See you in the new forums around 5PM PST and we do apologize for any of you who experience some sort of forum post withdrawal during this read only period. Wink

Thanks everyone!
-Lee Koo

This time we are NOT going to jinx the forumsHappy Everything will go as plannedHappy I think I am starting to have an anxiety attack, just thinking about not being able to post!!! LOL
I just hope the techs remember how upset we all were about the small fonts issue and that it won't happen again. And that it will fit on everyones browsers and monitors like it shouldHappy

I'm hoping the bugs are all dead...
Nov 7, 2006 1:25PM PST

While most of the bugs I found were squished the final beta version still had several crawling around in the walls, so I sure hope the exterminator has gassed 'em before the open house.

Me too
Nov 7, 2006 7:59PM PST

I agree with John, I hope they make the CNET forums bug less, I'm getting tired of seeing this message from time to time "We're sorry, but the page you requested could not be found." Even on a correct page, that's the problem with database websites. And make sure they use good bug spray, wouldn't want bugs slithering and crawling about.

As a suggestion make sure the new forums have a proper forum layout, like traditional forums but more customized and possibly make sure that they run faster, because I have noticed that when I post something it's quite slow, must be my 64 k/bit upload speed.

New forums
Nov 17, 2006 8:22AM PST

Appears to me that the new forum pages are too large. I have to scroll vertically and horizontally way more than with the old pages.
Unless someone can tell me how to remedy this, go back to the old software.

Well...
Nov 17, 2006 8:47AM PST

The new forums, like the rest of Cnet, were designed with the standard 17" monitor set at 1024x768 resolution in mind. The old forums aren't coming back for many reasons:
1.) They were in incredibly bad shape...to say they were on their last leg would be underestimating how bad they were.
2.) The new forums are based on the latest version of Jive, patching several old issues.
3.) New functionality, such as the ability to change thread views, just wasn't possible with the old forums.
4.) The decision to go to the so-called 'wide-screen' layout came from the top based on the demographics. (Statistically only a small percentage of people use 15" and smaller displays and/or 800x600 resolution.)

Thus, there's no turning back now.

That said, the best solution is to change your resolution to 1024x768, which is considered the standard now. Alternatively, you can use the built-in ability in IE7 and Opera 9 to zoom in and out on webpages. There's also Firefox extensions that can add that ability until Firefox 3 launches next Spring. And don't forget that you can return to Tree view if you like.

Feedback
Nov 8, 2006 8:38AM PST

Hi, I like the threaded view! Are there any other user-configurable goodies, or is that it?

I do not like the light blue and the light gray text colors, they are really hard on the eyes.

That's it for now...

The main goal was to update the Jive software and move to the new servers, but more functionality is in the works.

In regards to the colors, if you use Firefox you can use GreaseMonkey to change them.

yes, there are still bugs
Nov 9, 2006 5:47PM PST

For me the forums are slower to load in the browsers Microsoft Internet Explorer 6, Opera 9 and Firefox 2.0

I also posted qoutemarks a few days ago (of course I didn't know it would turn out like &qout) and got stick off one of your moderators for it (he called my post trashed!), so please sort this out, and your moderator's attitude.

Other than that, I like the fresher design.

Very nice, Lee!
Nov 9, 2006 1:33AM PST

I've already brought up the font colors and sizes (which I still think is bad), but I had a couple other suggestions after spending more time using the forums. I'm using and liking the threaded view.

One, a 'next unread' is needed! It's very difficult to find new posts. It's a ton of scrolling, and sometimes through several pages.

Secondly, speaking of several pages...why is this necessary? Why not put the entire thing on one page, so that if we have to scroll, it's a one page to scroll through and not multiple pages to scroll through?

Otherwise, these are a great improvement, and I send thanks to you and all the folks who worked so hard to get these forums up and running right!
