Attention David Chan, Modem Madness!

Nov 20, 2003 10:23PM PST

Here's the latest (sorry for not appending to the other post, but, under the new forum's format...)

I uninstalled, removed and (blew out the dust) installed the modem.
I set up a fax to send to my office, it dialed (silently), connected (silently) and closed. The fax showed up at the office, but, when I had it dial my land line home phone, it dialed (silently) and timed out never ringing the home phone.

I knew many would love to silence their modems (I checked under properties, the volume is set to HIGH), so the silence isn't a big problem, but why would it connect to the fax, but fail to dial my home phone?

Don't waste too much thought on this one, as the fax can send and, therefor, it is no longer a problem, but it is perplexing, no?

Are you using your PC's modem to dail back the number you are dialing out from?

Isn't that not going to work.

Time for more coffee!

Not sure what you are asking, but

I am using the modem (second home line) to dial the main (first home line) telephone number, no dice, and no ring...
but...
when same modem dials my office, it successfully faxes (in silent mode)

If it times out before it even rings the phone, check this. Control Panel- Phones and Modem Options-Modem Tab- select your modem-Properties-Advanced Tab-Change Default Preferences-General Tab- Cancel the call if not connected within ? seconds. I have seen it set to zero for some reason, and it won't work like that!!
For the silence, if you have already verified speaker on through the above route, also go to your dial-up connection, right click, choose properties, general tab, configure, down at bottom, enable modem speaker.
If it's like it was in Win98, some programs that dial out use modem settings as set in control panel, and you can have different settings in your dial-up modem configuration.
