Attacks on PCs

I am in a constant argument with my partner and now my apple using 17 year old daughter about the dangers of broadband use for microsoft products in terms of attacks from every direction. I just installed the XP number 2 service pack, I run Norton AV (I've been arguing for KAV and loosing) I turned off the XP firewall and run ZoneAlarm, and I installed a router. I also want to run a different browser than IE6 (any suggestions, have heard about foxfire). I have verizon dsl and I still feel that my system is vulnerable to malware of every discription. Am I right or what?
Thank you for your support <grin>
relentlesss, and I am....
