Attack code surfaces for latest Windows vulnerability

Nov 17, 2003 1:07PM PST

Exploit code has been released for one of the recent Microsoft XP operating system vulnerabilities. Microsoft released a patch for the Windows Workstation service on November 11, 2003. Within three days two different examples of exploit code had surfaced on security-related discussion lists. According to Dan Ingevaldson of X-Force at Internet Security Systems, both set of code "work," meaning they cause a buffer overflow in the Workstation service, which is left "on" by default in Windows XP an 2000 operating systems. However, neither exploit would make for an effective worm, as they both contain multiple bugs. Ingevaldson cautions that hackers worldwide will be refining the code in the coming days. Such a pattern of refinement preceded the release of the Blaster and Nachi worms in August, Ingevaldson said.
