ATT Vs. Time Warner Cable

Aug 17, 2008 5:44AM PDT

I'm a college student moving into an Apartment in Austin next week and I am trying to figure out which is the best way to get my internet (and TV) I have been doing my own research on both ATT and Time Warner's Websites, but I am having trouble making a clear decision. ATT's U-Verse offers TV and internet a little cheaper than TWC's TV/internet bundle that's similar, and they both offer roughly the same thing. I'm a little inclined to go with ATT because my parents have had issues with TWC in the past, likewise I know a lot of people who say Cable is faster than DSL. However, I am seeing ATT's DSL package that offers 6Mbps down and 768kbps Up, while 7 down and 512 up. Like I said, I'm in an apartment, I'll only have one TV on the system, so the bit about ATT only letting one HD stream in isn't such a big deal. I'll also have my laptop, my desktop, and my Xbox 360 that I'll be plugging into the internet.
Any input that would help would be great. - thanks

Unplugged DSL a few years ago.

Sorry, I wouldn't wish that on today's users. But if it's cheap enough, say 20 percent of cable?

the bundles are within about $10 of each other (both running around $100/month for TV and internet) if I'm reading everything right (TWC's website is a little confusing and hard to naviagte, so I'm not sure if HD is included)

What did you mean "I wouldn't wish that on today's users" that caused you to unplug your DSL. My parents have DSL here at our house, and while its not insanely fast (we're only getting about 700mbps down on a good day) its fast enough for anything I'm doing. (including xbox live most of the time) - and from what I know our service is pretty good...

Check your apartment's location. . .

DSL is distance limited. You may be out of range for that speed. Look at it very closely. But a slight correction and maybe an option. You cannot run TV over DSL. Are you sure that AT&T offer is not fiber? It is a huge difference. Pure DSL is copper and you might get 768 down on a good day, and no TV. You are probably looking at the AT&T fiber offering.

where would I find if it's within range of that offer? I gave the website my zip code, and it hasn't warned me of anything, then again, I could simply be looking at the wrong thing, since I've never looked at this stuff before...

The web site is rather a dunce on this.

I had to call in and talk to them the first time I setup my DSL. The web site was just a NT (nice try.)

Yeah, what Bob said. . .

and I was going to suggest. Make a phone call and have them describe the entire package.

ATT's U-Verse, I'm lovin' it.

TV reception is much better then Comcast that I had. Internet is good at 10,000/1500. I don't have the phone service. Is U-Verse available to you? Is there a VRAD close to you?

I'm pretty sure it is, though like the others said I suppose I'll have to make a call to find out for sure - what is VRAD?

ATT Vs. Time Warner Cable

I have both ATT internet (6 mbs) and Time Warner internet (cheapest) connected currently. ATT is $24.95/mo and TW is $ 49.00/mo. TW is at least four times faster...400%! It's a no brainer for me. ATT is out-a-here.
