Atrocious boot times

Mar 16, 2011 6:33AM PDT

First I will say that I am running some old hardware for e-mail and browsing as well as newer hardware as workhorses.

On the old hardware (Core Duo, 1.5GB RAM, Win XP Home) I cannot wait any longer for BootUp with AVG. I have timed SafeMode boot at 2min 39sec. Add AVG (removed all else from startup) and Boot Time increases to 4.5 minutes.

On newer PCs (6core, 8GB RAM, Win 7-64bit, SSD) I would constantly get "Explorer not responding" errors (this is NOT Internet Explorer - this is the Desktop/ToolBar Manager Explorer). Had to spend copious amounts of time trouble-shooting it. As far as I can tell, there is a problem on install with inserting the "Scan with" right-click selection in the menus that causes Win 7 to go nuts. Switched to a real 64bit anti-virus and the problem went away.

The old PCs I use for general-purpose low-stress usage. They are still fine for that (plus I don't have to care if I crash the system). Most of my down time is spend on those PCs since they are good enough.

But not with AVG on them. I grow old just thinking about the boot time.

Hello jaythain,

please be informed that the increased boot time can be caused by other protection applications running together with AVG.

Can you please gather MSinfo32 output, upload to favorite online storage and provide us with link to it? So we can analyze possible conflict with other used application (or remains of incorrectly uninstalled).

Could you please provide us with more details about the errors with Internet Explorer and shell extension scan? As we are using AVG 2011 on many computers with Windows 7 64bit without any issue. Are you using other extension add-ins?

Thank you

Please re-read my post.

First, on my older PC I said I ran a comparison with SafeBoot. Then with only AVG installed.

FYI I also ran AutoRuns and ShellView and disabled all but MS code and AVG. There was NOTHING running besides AVG when my boot time doubled.

As for Explorer. Again - REREAD MY POST. I said it is NOT INTERNET EXPLORER - it is the DESK MANAGER/TOOLBAR MANAGER (which MS ALSO JUST HAPPENS TO CALL EXPLORER.

Google "Win 7 Explorer Not Responding" for more info.

Good luck.

Hello jaythain,

Could you please provide us with requested MSinfo outputs from both of the computers?
Also provide us with event log files from computer that is displaying 'Explorer not responding' errors.

Thank you
