One must first establish equality between

the various mfr's CPUs. Then simply go to a place such as http://www.newegg.com and check prices.

Go to http://www.tomshardware.com and read the article comparing the dual core CPU's from Intel and AMD. When the AMD's come out, I think that Intel will have to drop the prices somewhat. If they don't, AMD will raise their's slightly so maybe they can make some profit this year. LOL

Just be real happy that both companies are still in business.

when to buy?
May 22, 2005 8:03AM PDT

would it be wise to buy a computer at this time? or should I wait for dual-core to come out? Also, will future AMD Dual-Cores work with Socket 939?

Also, I hear a lot about the minimum requirements of Windows Longhorn being quite high, does anyone know exactly how high? and when it will come out?

I want to get a ATI X800XL, and I was wondering if anyone had any opinion on this card? And if this card would still be good by the time longhorn comes out.

Yep, the AMD dual core WILL

work with the socket 939. probably take a BIOS update. Why not read the article in toms hardware????? It tells one that item of interest.

Waiting is determined by yourself, why would you let someone here make decisions for you. Read and make your own decisions.

Too early to tell....

on price dropping, but when new comes out for awhile the prices of old start to drop.

I would expect the Intel 5xx series computers to drop in price now that the newer Intel 6xx series with 64-bit are out.

Prices on the new dual core processors are currently high even for AMD.

Newegg doesn't have anything out yet for AMD, and the AMD 64 Dual Core Processing family is supposed to include models:

4800 = $1001
4600 = $803
4400 = $581
4200 = $537
respectively, in 1000 unit quantities

Intel:
Newegg doesn't have anything out yet for Intel, and the Intel Dual Core Processing family is supposed to be the Pentium D Processors. Intel currently has:

Pent D Processor 820, 2.8GHz (price unk)
Pent D Processor 830, 3.0GHz (price unk)

Pent D Processor 840, 3.2GHz
The Dual Core Intel Pentium Processor Extreme Edition 3.2GHz, with motherboard, Intel D955X BKLKR, and 955X PCI-Express chipset with DDR2 is supposed to be $1050.

I would expect further in the Intel 8xx series to be realeased before long.

New Graphics Card?
May 24, 2005 4:21PM PDT

Would it be an good time for a new graphics card? I am looking at a X800XL 256MB card... I am worried that 256 will not be enough when Longhorn comes out...

I wouldn't worry....

As the past has demonstrated, I don't think game companies or other software companies will want to lose millions upon million of dollars by even attempting to exclude 128MB video cards, much less 256MB.

Longhorn comes out..??????

Lets see now that longhorn thing is targeted to be released per MS in holiday of 06 ( this seems to imply December of 06).
Now keep in mind how many PCs are out there and how many will be sold before lh hits the streets. Billy G wants people to buy this thing so he has to make it run on as many PCs as possible. Just look at minimum specs that ms says you need to run XP. If lh won't run on every PC made in the last 5~7 years no one will buy it. John

Thanks for the info guys.

I was wondering if anybody has the X800XL and what they think about it. It seems to get a lot of good reviews on the internet, but I was wondering if there was anybody who actually owns one and what they have to say about it.
